40' Planatec, Double Two Shirt

As previously mentioned, we are looking to sell the ex Double Two Shirts, Follett, Rejuga race boat. The hull has been renovated and is in excellent condition. It is fitted with Mk3 drives and Keikhafer tabs.

This boat is ideal for the Round Britain Race, but sponsorship issues may result in us self funding our entry and as this craft has cost us about £40k so far, we are indeed stretched. However, our determination to enter the RB means that we will listen to all proposals. Any part ex that is class legal would be of great interest.

The boat has been moved to Drivers in Southampton

had a look at it today but what would be the way to go engine wise at a sensible cost ,any idears?

big petrol V8s, its the only cost effective way.

Certainly, the race results look better with diesels, but it looked pretty lively in 1980 with its petrols.

Petrols would be the only cost effective way. The Sabre Marathons ended up producing 630hp the top speed was 82mph. The sabre weighed about a ton each.

Well I did make a guestimate of low 80's with around 600hp so I was not far out...but I must say that's rather an exact speed 82mph, I take it you must of either raced along side it or been on-board...would I also be right in saying it must have weighed in at 4500+kg so what do you think it would weigh and go like with say twin 525hp petrols

At the risk of showing my ignorance, I reckon that the 2000lb saving by switching to 2x525s, equates to the same loss by swithing 1260hp to 1050. Therefore, the speed remains the same.

(Square Root of (Total Shaft Horsepower /* Weight ) x Constant = Speed)

I await being corrected!

I tend to agree in theory that sort of weight saving would more or less leave speeds unchanged however in my book there are still other factors such as the loss of performance at the start of each race against the diesel's that were fitted later and the possible loss in performance due to the substantial lack of torque the deisel units had to fight against the higher wetted surface area I believe was inherent in the design...but still in reality it should fight battles in a Classic Class thereby not fighting directly with newer stepped designs such as the Dragon that was said to do around 90mph with 2X525hp in spite of being weighted to close on 5000Kg

I belive that it used to have a large fuel tank forward of the cockpit that was removed due to the diesels better fuel consumption. so it would have better weight distrubution as a diesel.

Gary (Techno 40) is 'Mr Sabre', he worked for them, doing loads with the Marathons, including looking after the clockwork bits in Debenhams / Shockwave.

Ah Thank you JF it would appear Gary does have all the inside info on Follett cars then, also sounds like a very useful guy to know if you should run deisel engines in your boat...actually this thread made me realise I may have been well off on the 4500+kg I had assumed for the boat without fuel...if the engines were around 1500kg each as Gary points out and the boat itself rigged to race less engines probably tips the scales in excess of 3000kg, combined makes the boat 6000+kg with it's deisel engines this gives a power to weight ratio far worse than P1 super sport series of today so 82mph would be extremely good, thereby re-engined with petrol 525hp it could result in around the mid 80's putting it in fighting contention with many of today's super sport boats not bad for a classic boat, that shows the design was pretty good all those years back after all

PS... and still one of my favourite classic boats

A very handy guy to know then Gordon...That reminds me their was a guy I knew from school years ago that I used to have the odd beer with, but I did spend many hours with his brother talking about rally cars that was a passion of his, later on he got a job doing deisel engines in boats then he went to work for Sabre in Ferndown, I used to meet him at boat shows and occasionally I would bump into him around Poole for a chat he was always working on or selling Seatek engines his name was Paul...have you heard of him Gary if so what happened to him

Yes that is the guy, Paul was always pretty laid back during the 90's he left Sabre once to go touring around Australia and I used to catch up with him on his mountain bike occasionally but like I say since around early 2000's I have not caught up with him for a chat
