Matt,
Whats up with the 7.4L in your garage then?
With regard to E-Bays Auction, Firstly the whole point of an auction is that you bid want you think its worth (this is the important bit, you must be sure that its worth your Bid), Place your bid and happily walk away knowing that if you win you will be happy and if you lose you will be happy. Cos you know you havent paid more than its worth!
If something is up for 400.00 and you think its worth 2000.00, Bid 2000.00 and wait patiently. Dont up your bid at the last minute cos you will shit out. Your 2000.00 bid will let the vendor know you are serious and all the other wankers who are looking for something for nothing will **** off and leave your bid alone.
IMHO E-Bay is full of shit sold by bullshitting wankers. Excersise Patience, do your research and you will find what you are looking for in the end without getting tucked up like a kipper by some **** in a lockup in Essex.
I sold my 18 month old XJR 1300SP on E-Bay to a wanker. I had paid 6000 for it new and it had service history and was in pristine condition.
This cocksucker wins it at 3200.00 then turns up and tries to chip me 60.00 cos the front tyre is on the legal limit!!! What a complete arsehole.
The upshot was that he bought it 1600.00 less than the market rate and then gave me bad feedback on E-Bay!!!!
I still occasionally buy from ebay overseas but never sell on it.
PS. Anyone interested in a 3 Meg Nikon 950 Digital camera with 2 optional lenses. Immaculate condition, just bought the Nikon D70 so no longer required.

Oh, and the Cigarrette 28!
I think it looks like a Banana, is overpriced and best left alone.
Unless of course they will take 2500.00 of her Majesty's finest for it

Captain this is what you need, I raced one for a few years thrashed it without any problems, took off the rev limiters and had it blue printed.

I could point him the right direction, but !
Seriously, I Ski raced one for a few years on a Phantom 21 never let me down, no rebuilds, not as quick as the equivalent Big Black things, but he could still learn to stroke it !

The Yamaha will NOT let you down and will start first time every time Captain. The Big Mercs may not be as reliable but they will look great and sound great. Do you want the Japanese reliability Think (Toyota Supra) or the English style TVR, unrealibale but sounds and looks great! and when she goes she blows!
Maybe your a bit old for a MERC ! My Dad says its TOO Loud bit like EssexBoyz exhausts!

Yamaha Outboards are indeed very good and reliable.
Yamaha have excellent credentials in engine manufacture, in fact ill let you all into a little secret, if you look under the bonnet of toyotas in Japan they will have the word YAMAHA on the engine!!!
Why, Cos no-one in the world has the wealth of knowledge that yamaha has when it comes to understanding air flow. This knowledge has been gained from their experience of building reed valve wind instruments. Yamaha have designed the inlet systems for many turbo charged engines.
Id definately pick a yam over a Mercury outboard, just as i d allways pick a Jap car over Yank junk.
