cookee style wiring required

The Bladerunner has 4 bilge pumps, and they are 'wired' to use the term loosely with ordinary flex cable and crimp blade and spade fittings.

Needless to say they are all corroded.

I will be doing a rewire on the boat. But I want to do it properly.

Where can we get the wire and glued shrinkwrap that cookee uses? I can ask cookee, but my PM's bounce

Does anyone know what I am talking about?

It is special cable, and special heatshrink so you dont get corrosion issues when your wiring gets wet. ( Cookees boats and the XS Sunseeker use it. )

I know what you mean dude. I worked as an auto electrician on some specialist vehicles for about ten years.

The stuff you need is called 'Adhesive lined heatshrink' and it's made by er.... some American company whose name eludes me.

I used to get mine from Farnell Components, but I believe RS Components also stock it. It was about a tenner a metre if I remember right. Shrinks down to 33% of it's original size.

You'll need a proper heatgun for it though. A hairdryer won't get the glue melted enough even though it'll shrink the plastic.

Farbell are (were?) in Canal Road in Leeds, RS Components were based in Corby, but Google them and you should find their websites which enable you to buy the stuff online. They do a good range of MIL-spec (Military specification) connectors too. Well worth a browse.

Good luck.

Here you go Pal:

http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/home/homep...XSFFGAVAAS4IV3

It was made by 'Raychem' but that was a few years ago. There's probably loads of people make it now. Not got time to find it for you, sadly, but have a browse through there anyway coz there'll be loads of useful stuff!

Tinned wire is available from Aquafax in the Hamble, comes in a variety of colours and sizes, ranging form 8amp up to 300amp battery cable! I buy it in 30 metre rolls. Whilst your there you can also pickup Blue Sea battery switches, switch panels and terminal strips. I'm there tomorrow, if you know what you want let me know and I'll leave it with Gill at the yard!

Heat shrink terminals can be bought from RS Components in Hedge End, open an account on line and you'll get it in the post next day!

http://rswww.com/cgi-bin/bv/rswww/su...o?cacheID=ukie

together with heat shrink tubing

"Edit" hmm, those links don't seem to work, so you'll have to use their search engine, which is the most frustrating thing you'll ever find!

Show us how it's done.

We use Merlin for our cabler, but any tinned stuff is good - it's the normal copper coloured wire that just goes black as soon as it gets near salt water that you have to avoid.

We get the terminals from Worth or RS componants - again any heat shrink crimp terminals with glue inside will do the trick.

Merlin also do a range of other bits and pieces that you might need.

RS also do Kroy printers that print onto heatshrink - we label each end of each cable so you know what they do, it makes life easier when you come back to it!

Not claiming to be gods gift to wiring - it may not be as neat as yours Jon, but it'll last longer than a lot of stuff I've seen on other boats - with the products easily available there is no excuse for manufacturers to use regular car stuff that will only last one season at most - all in my opinion of course!

ps Tricky - recieved a PM this morning so it's not broke?

Thanks guys for the help First things for me to rewire is the fuel pumps and the bilge pumps. Then I will start looking at all the rest of the wiring...

Cookee - retried your PM.

Thank you Tony - I will need to figure out exactly what AMP wire I need for the bilge pumps.

I traced the 'black/blue' corrosion to see how far it went up the wiring, and it goes up the entire length, right up to the switch. I am amazed that the corrosion can travel up the wire so far...

It sortof eats away at the copper, and in some places the wire was so thin it was only about 1/3rd of the 'space' it used to be inside the plastic.

Cookee, can you tell me more about the Kroy printers thing?

Merlin are distributors for Blue Sea, as are Aqufax.

I've always found worth to be pricey!

Why not colour code, far easier and quicker!

Most pumps up to around 1000lph are 5amp!

Do a search on RS for Kroy - I have one that is connected to the PC, but I think there is also a stand alone one - it prints directly onto the heatshrink, you then shrink them onto either end of the cable - looks good and you'll always know which wire does what - no need for lots of multi coloured wires - just red and black!

Email me on cookee@bananasharkracing.com that'll get through!

Dude, You'd be amazed at how far that black corrosion will spread, even in road vehicles! Once it gets like that there's nothing you can do short of pulling it out and rewiring it.

I would have thought that 17.5 amp would be more than adequate for fuel pumps. It's what I used to use on cars.

If you need to borrow some good crimp tools when you are doing the work you are welcome to borrow ours where in Scotties old place, sometimes.

It might be worth doing your Battery terminals also, I have been pretty impressed by Aquafax and the Blue Sea stuff as recomendedededed by Tony Davis (hardly an endorsement is it ) is very sweet! :

Agreed, they're just lazy! in the last couple of years, all this stuff has become very easy to get, and pretty reasonably priced.

I wasn't making any comparisons with anyones wiring, but as VT named the thread in the way he did, it seems appropriate to display what he has obviously seen and been impressed with.

How can Cookee put it in his £30k rib, and Icemarine not in a £150k Bladerunner?

To be fair, when your blade was built, what, 5, 6 years ago at least, it wasn't so easy to just buy off the shelf.
As I said, "In the last couple of years, all this stuff has become easy to get".

Probably because the Blade was rigged by "you know who", and the wiring by the infamous "one armed leccy"!!!!!

Still no excuse though! Perhaps there wasn't enough profit in the job to do it properly.
