I just got a reply too...
Sorry but the item will be shiped to your home address. The reason why I am not able to make a face to face transaction is because I am curently out of the country. I would have also prefered payment on collection as well.
Thanks in advance for the understanding.

haha....

Marketplace Safety Tip
Purchase Protection and Refund:
Currently, the above mentioned Seller has a US $20,000.00 deposit in the eBay managed purchase protection account. Transactions with this eBay Seller are covered by purchase protection against fraud and description errors (i.e. eBay Buyer Protection Program and eBay Fraud Protection Program). Should you need a refund for this transaction, the insured amount will be taken from the Seller's purchase protection account and sent to you. The refund is sent to your bank account, or by check or money order. The way you are refunded is at your choice. You have 30 days from the above verification date to request a refund. Refund requests are processed within 3 days. The insurer of this transaction is eBay Inc., located at 2145 Hamilton Avenue, San Jose, CA 95125, United States of America. The account is managed by eBay's Square Trade center and this transaction is supervised by eBay's Safe Harbor team.

Conditions to be met before you may ask for a Refund:
Here are the situations suitable for a refund request
- if the item doesn't arrive and/or the seller stops communications after the payment has been sent;
- if your merchandise arrives in a much longer period than the one you agreed upon (more than 15 days from the payment clearance day). In these case you have to return the merchandise to the seller prior to ask for your refund. If you did not pay the seller by the required payment method, your refund request would be declined.
- if you receive an item that is clearly different from what you purchased in a way that significantly affects its value or utility. For example a Rolex watch that when received is counterfeit, or an item listed as working that doesn't work when you receive it. (The SquareTrade Claims Administrator makes this determination in its sole discretion and may require you to provide a written statement from a qualified appraiser, at SquareTrade's sole discretion).

Hi verytricky

Did you win the item?

I still think this is a scam. The seller is no longer an ebay member and £1400 is far far too cheap!

Also, if the payment is being made to a uk account, there is no need for western union transfer? This is for int. transfers - not UK to UK. This would be a standard chaps / bacs if it was UK.

Hope for the winners sake that it is genuine but do not think it is .

Al

The info is:

despite the winner living in Twickenham - less than 1 mile from the seller - he would not allow collection, but required a Western Union money transfer, then the item would be courriered.

He would not allow COD, COC or Bank Transfer.

The address given is bogus.

The Police are not interested in investigating.

Ebay are not interested, just cancelled the account.

Bottom line - yes, it definately was a scam, no question at all.

Since the alert given on boatmad, the bid was set at £10 000 to ensure that the item was won by someone who had the savvy to investigate things first, before handing over money, thus protecting to some extent some innocent out there who may have paid out. So well done on the alert!
