Engine thiefs in IOW last night

A friend of mine phoned me this evening to tell me he had his yamaha f150 outboard stolen from a marina in cowes (IOW) last night night along with five other engines stolen from the same marina. He had an engine lock on the boat but they just cut through the controls and steering etc.
The CCTV didn't pickup anything as it was so foggy -thieving bastards....

There are some horrible people in the world!!
Must have been a reasonable size boat to take 5 engines if they were that sort of size!

engines thief

Same in France , 2 months ago, 80000€ of different outboards stolen in the night plus the outboard dealer Van! They still looking after the thieves!
A couple of years ago they found a ''thief action'' in the night, the police chased the thieves, and found they have XXL tee-shirt in the truck. Guys coming for east of Europe. Very strong persons able to remove a 250hp from a transom at a speed you can't beleive....
One time the french custom found a huge stolen outboards batch in a 38tonnes truck, hidden behind a loading of frozen meat in direction to East of Europe.
That's why now for boat stored outside, most of the time there is no gearcase on them in France. And our boats insurances was increased too after this period.
If the boat is at mooring, they beach the boat in a quiet place for easier and fast removing action...

Post descriptions of everything stolen so we can all look out for them - someone must be trying to off load them somewhere?

Makes no difference because they just put a signal scrambler in the van until they can search them with locators and pull all the trackers out out.

I know of Police finding a stolen car in a garage because they lost signal outside the garage, then searched it.

Police update

Police update:Early investigations indicate that this was carried out by an organised crime gang of Lithuanian males using hire vans and other vehicles displaying English registrations (owned by them) as support vehicles on the day of the theft.
There is strong evidence suggesting the gang used a 4x4 vehicle to carry out a reccy of the targeted premises about 7 days before the theft.

Please be alert to this and record number plates of any suspicious vehicles at your marinas and sailing clubs - they predictably target the more "out of the way" premises so would deem these to be most at risk.

Were these all unbolted then? If you were to weld the bolts as to render them impossible to move except for grinding/cutting I guess that could help?

chainsaw your transom

If they cannot take the bolts, nuts out , they are able to do this ( not done in Europe)

And, forgot to mention, now in France they start to steal catalytic silencers from cars on parkings!!! Check your insurance to be sure external components of your car are covered by the insurance. Stealings again done by people from same countries mentionned above.

GPS Beacon on your outboard or boat.

A 2014 system exists to protect your investments, you need to install a GPS beacon Under the cowling, this beacon send a signal, an info, on your mobile, or home computer like an alert if the outboard move, or the entire boat. Not cheap, if they didn't detect the beacon Inside the cowling you are able to follow the stolen stuff by traking. may be interesting, at least as soon the engine move the alert is sent.... the beacon isn't so small but use 3 years live on batteries, may be they 're going to reduce the size of the beacon on the next design.
They have also, presence detector, bilge level detector, with alerts send on your mobile, pc, tablet,.
Here the link, it's a French company, no translation for the moment, but you can easily translate french to English with your computer.
Soon they will have a English language selection.

http://www.dolink.fr/particuliers/watcher

Watcher integrated:

An enclosure, remote control by a smartphone a tablet or a computer, is equipped with a GPS for the location of the boat, and a modem for the transmission of positions, alerts, and reports of operation by the mobile phone network GSM/GPRS
In case of movement of the boat, it transmits its position every 10 minutes. Outside GSM coverage local, this unit stores the positions for the pass that he joined a coverage area.
An unlimited subscription: an internet application ensures a permanent control of your boat and provides services related to geolocation or the eve weather. Thus you can check the position of the vessel and the surrounding conditions as often as you want!
Assistance to the recovery in case of theft.

The services of Watcher:

Monitoring and close
Wherever you are, you keep a window open on your boat thanks to the simple and user friendly interface of Dolink
The tools allow you to prepare a navigation

Displacement of the boat
If your boat is moved (motion detection), Watcher notifies you immediately by email and SMS text messages.
The "tracking" allows to facilitate its recovery in case of theft.

As Frenchbruno says they just cut out the transom - done in Norway on boat in my local harbour while the boat was still on the water, brand spanking new only had it for a day...
The owner had spent a fortune on securing the engine to the transom with special bolts etc.

Frenchbruno isnt the solution you refer to also rendered useless if the thieves use a cheap gps/gsm blocker?

Ok, This way then The 'tracker' (whatever you want to call it) sends a signal say every 5mins, IF that signal fails (due to jamming/interruption) you are then informed...

Job done In fact it could be 2 part. The engine has a transponder that simply polls another part of the system or even marina base sataion... That way only sends a signal from the base station if there is a problem, i.e. comms lost between engine/boat.

Loads of ways to do this.... Non difficult with todays tech...

They have been doing Catalytic's for years over here particularly on sprinters. Mate of mine who sells vans lost 6 in one night watched them on his cctv
