Engine wanted

I'm after a 2 stroke 225ish motor, 20" mid and preferably low-water pick ups... Around £3k to spend - is there anything about?

Cheers

Paul

I know of everything you need for that apart from a powerhead, should someone offer one... Could be the easiest way to get a decent motor reasonably cheap.

Are the old 225 promaxes 2.5 or 3 litre based? If 2.5 as i think they are that'd probably be ideal, I'd imagine 3 litre would upset the balance too much.

The promaxes are 2.5. I take it you know of a decent 20" leg and sporty gearbox? If my 200 powerhead is ok we could stick that on with a few mods... As it is with the 25" leg it's jacked right up on the transom with wooden blocks to increase the height, and it's still only just got the cav plate level with the bottom of the pad. The 200 would probably be enough if we can get it nice and high with a decent prop. My transom is exactly 20"

is it stuff you've got or is it someone you know?

Someone I know, i had the stuff for a little while when i was gonna build the ring 20 last year.

I can get you a 20" offshore mid with trim pump and a 20" gearbox. It's not a sporty, but with my past boats I've just tapped in a transom pickup instead, that way you never have to worry about engine height giving a good enough water feed. Should your impeller fail I'm sure a transom pickup would still provide enough water pressure, and that way you've got two totally seperate pickups too, the transom one and the standard one, as a failsafe should one become blocked.

I'm sure you'd be able to borrow the leg and box pending purchase to see how it goes and save you wasting any money

My old 2.5 200 was a very pokey motor with skimmed heads and exhaust chest porting, plus it was super reliable. I'd say that's quite a good option!

Does sound good yeah... Fingers crossed it runs ok, could be the best and cheapest option for decent speed!

Is the exhasut porting a big job?

Nah, few hours work with a die grinder, just takes some care to get it right. Same as porting a head really.
