First time boat help

So after much much searching, I have found two very different boats that have caught my eye.

Ring 16 with 2006 Mercury outboard

and

1998 Glastron 165 with Penta 3l inboard

Am I right in thinking that the 135hp Glastron will be almost as fast and have a similar cruising speed to the 75hp ring? The Glastron's engine is a lot older (1998 vs 2006) and is inboard, is this a massive issue - these engines are apparently "bomb-proof". The older 4 stroke should also not be too much worse on fuel than the 2-stroks... Right? The Ring is fresh-water though, a big plus.

Both boats could do with coming down in price a little, does anyone have any idea if the asking prices are fair or what they should be priced at instead?

Neither boat has any history (receipt etc.)

Thanks!

The main use of the boat is jumping between islands in the med - 20-25 miles - quickly and relatively inexpensively. Skiing too and reasonable comfort for my passengers.

Both have asking prices of £4000

Depends what you want to use the boat for really!
If you fancy taking the kids for a picnic on the island and pulling tubes with friends then the glastrons probably a better choice. If its a bit more of a sporty drive youre after, with a bit skiing and tubing then the Ring is your man! With much better rough water handling.

Personally I wouldnt have even been looking at the glastron if given the choice!

It's a tough choice. Am i right in thinking they will perform similarly in terms of speed and fuel consumption? What about with 4 people onboard? Also can anyone advise on the asking price of £40 each?

boat choice

modern more powerful glastron or old ring, its a no brainer surely, ring with 75hp will bog down speedwise more with 4 adults in than the glastron

Hi,

I don’t know which part of the Med you will be using the boat – or how exposed/offshore your proposed cruising area will be, but rather than just focusing on speed/consumption- it would also be wise to consider safety and sea-keeping side of things especially if it is your first boat and plan on taking it 20 to 25 miles (i.e. up to 12 miles offshore)

A good look at safety equipment included (hand held VHF, lifejackets-anchor tow rope etc- if any) and service history of the engines- especially for the prices quoted.

If your first boat- also good idea to use it and get used to it before heading too far offshore and consider going in company with another boat (usually more fun too!)

My personal opinion; the Ring 16 is a better Sea boat if not overloaded with people and gear with the Glastron more suitable for towing toys in the bay.

Wise words Guy, I have been boating for many years and even now would think twice about taking a 16Ft boat 12 miles off shore, and with respect to new boater you really need to know what you are doing as it can cut up rough very quickly

I have a Ring 15 with a 90, and the only way I'd take it the 25 miles or so to our neighbouring island of Jersey would be on a flat calm day with winds no bigger than F1-2, and alongside a larger boat.

Did the trip this summer in my larger and far more capable 22ft Bernico with 200. It was beautifully calm when we left, 5 miles offshore was a different story though! Whilst never unsafe or dangerous, it was a long long way from being comfortable!

Thanks everyone. I will definitely be investing in a radio, but the sea is really well behaved in the bay in Corfu (where I will be keeping the boat). Here's a map, the boat will be in Benitses - the whole area being very sheltered as it faces the mainland, and will be used mainly to go up and down the island or to the mainland and sometimes to Paxos (the small island to the south of Corfu). But will never be more than 4 miles form land.

So I reckon a 16 footer is perfect for the job.

boating abroad

not sure if its all country's abroad but I know certain countries want the boat registered, and you may have to have the necessary certification with the boat, ce etc, which you may not be able to get with an older model boat, just a thought.

In Greece, so long as the boat is kept dry docked for 6 months a year, you can run it as a tourist and have it registered in the UK. I don't intend to import it to Greece.

That's cool, the 15 I have is a great little boat. Loads of fun to drive and very safe, as long as you recognise it's limits!

Thanks for all the responses and advice. Can anyone advise on the asking prices of the two boats?

£4k including good trailers.

1998 Glastron with Penta 3l (also 98)

2004 Ring 16 with Mercury 75 outboard (2006)

Thanks!

I don't think that Ring 16A is a 2004 build...

The seller said they "thought" it was 2004. The engine is 2006 though.

Worth the asking price?

It's difficult to say without viewing the boat in person, although it looks reasonably tidy from the photos!

I guess it depends on how much boat you're expecting to get for your money - provided that the engine is sound, it would seem about right as an asking price to me.

Regards, Sam.

I'd say it's around 20 years older than they thought!

Please excuse the 'last edited...' part in your post, I pressed the wrong button for this reply!

And just when I thought my search was over and I'd made a choice - a Ring 20 in excellent condition inside and out comes along, also at the £4k mark.

It has a 130 Yamaha V4 outboard. 1997. The only thing I'm concerned about is the age of the motor. Should I be?

I remember seeing a Ring 20 with an engine of about that age for sale a while ago - is it a blue and white striped boat?
