I really would advise staying away from L&S steering, it really is cheap and nasty!!!

LS steering applications.
There are different levels and prices for LS steering applications.
Pleasure applications:
for maxi 75 HP/115HP/150HP/175HP/200HP/300HP
A lot of boats use the new model without problem everyday. They are on the market for years and if they are bad as you state, why they still exist?
Have you seen the LS race steering yet?
How can you juge if the race procuct is bad?
You are soilling a brand speaking like this...
Hope you made a confusions with sizes applications, some people use sometimes le 150HP model on their 200HP, sure that's not safe, but not legal too, and not the advise of the manufacturer.
The race application with 2 cylinders is not so cheap at 1800 euros.
May be there is a confusion somewhere, if you are looking a 75HP applications, for sure don't compare this model for little engine with sea starpro (300HP and speed above 60mph).
Anyway, Laurent Plasse works with LS for the race application, and If my memory is good, he is in offshore racing for more than 15years, was also world champion 2005.
Have a look on the new 300 Hp front model, for me that's not so nasty and the sale price is correct too.
AS a boat buider you have to have an idea of what is good the the race outboard application, so what do you suggest with 2 cylinders at a decent price? Latham, Imco, Marine machine?
2 months ago, a friend of me just bought latham cylinders for a DON ARRONOW 27, because the rods was rusty on the two old ones , and as surely you know the price was also amazingly high.
I'm also sure that a lot of boatmember here don't have a big wallet, and sometimes it's interesting to know that other people make steering system rated at 300HP. But I'm not telling that's LS is the best of everything...

No, I'm not confused, 1500 pounds is far too expensive for a budget system

Any of those would be fine, although in a single ram application. I pprefer Imco, as it's better value, for what is really an identical product to the other two.

Having known two people who suffered steering failure at high speed, both got wet and injured, I'm with TD on this one. If there was one part on my boat i wouldn't skimp on, this would be it.
Short of your engine falling off or hitting something, i'm not sure anything could be worse than steering failure!
Agreed, some of us don't have a big wallet, mine is probably smaller than most, which is why we have a trading post here, so the financially challenged of us can buy quality 2nd hand parts from other (better off) members!
I know i'd take TD's advice on steering over pretty much anyone else's any day, he's been in the business long enough!

Off the top of me head, and I'd have to check me paperwork when I get in tonight, I reckon a complete set of Imco external steering, comprising of ram, wing plate, tilt pin, capilano helm, hoses, remote fill, hose ends etc is around £1500 landed, plus vat!
I haven't bought any for a few months, so I'll have to check.
Sea Star is quite a bit cheaper, but you have to rely on that little nut and bolt not failing!!!!!

I'm not sure, I think Burty and JBD cleared me out last time they were down, but I'll have a look.
The mercury bolt, part no:10-875273150 is a 1.5'' long bolt, retails for 21.59 + vat. I normally stock the Seastar one, it's a bit cheaper.
