Lifting an outboard

One of my projects for the winter months is to remove the engine from the hull and repair the jacking plate which has seized.

How is the best way to lift the engine - I have heard about fitting a "pad eye" to the fly wheel but have never seen one.

Anyone have any idea where I can buy one from - needs to fit a Merc XR2. I assume it just screws on to the threaded section that projects from the top of the fly wheel shaft is that correct?

The pucker merc lifting ring, screws into the large (about 400mm dia) threaded counterbore in the top of the flywheel. They're available from Keypart in Watford as a patern part.

Matt recently bought some merc special tool stuff from them, he may have prices.

Give keypart a call, and ask for Paul Ahearn, (I assume he still works there) he's very helpfull.

Bloody hell, I was only talking to my wife about him last week. Trying to decide whether he's younger than me...Haven't seen him for maybe 20 years.

I haven't seen him for many years either. When Ian and myself did the 1.3 worlds at Allhallows in 1993, we managed to break the saddle again. Finished 3rd though. When the boat was pulled out of the water we were greeted with a pint from Kay Brett/Jordan/Mortimore. After post race scrutineering, we took over the beer tent to strip engine from saddle. We were just about to lift the powerhead off when in walked laddie, with a tray of beers in hand. He then offered his lifting services and promptly removed said powerhead. And then there was the time that the Miss Fitz Stapley lost a wheel on the M3. They realised they didn't have a jack. Brilliant for garage trader!!!! Laddie lifted the boat, so that they could remove the jammed wheel. Of course this is the abridged version!!!!!!
