Also how many hours is 'low hours' as a 260 is a 100 hour motor!!!

Nicely spotted Jonny.
How do you know it's not a 280 with the alternator removed???
was it the fact that it's the old style block or was it the heads that gave it away.
280's run o-ring heads.

No I'm not saying it's a pile of poo.
The engine could be a nice peice of kit.
What I'm saying is it's not a 280 offshore.
It's a 260 EFI which at a guess is tuned to 280hp not the same thing as the 280 offshore.

Questions to ask if you do have a look, what tuning mods have been done, what compression is it running.
Which pistons does it have (very important) you want the new style double ring top pinned pistons (same as the 280 offshore)
Looks like the motor is limited to 8250 RPM from the fuel pressure regulator shown in the picture.
Which con rods it has.
How many holes in the bullet box two or four.
Just looked at picture it's a 2 hole box certainly not 1997 more like 1991-1994 ( not to say it hasn't been rebuilt)
The mid-section is 1997 or later, you can tell by the shape around the exhaust snout. (same as current design).
Ask the guy to remove the front end so that you can inspect the crank and bearings.
Also ask for a compression test to be done in front of you.
£4500 is a good price for this if the motor as long as it checks out ok.
I would go have a look, the 260 efi is very tunable (330 hp after some work) is achievable.

150psi ish. what you are looking for is all six read very similar.
Also that the motor runs on pump gas.
Normally on a rebuild you would replace all gaskets and bearings.
A new set of rings and honed out.
And every thing checked and cleaned.

Always a good time for tuning as the motor is apart.

ive just been on phone to guy i bought my engine off and he said the engines started out as 260's and were modified by smilin jack into 280's,they are fitted with top pin pistons and had the back cut out of block like on the 300 drag motor.i will post a pick of porting later.
by the way the engines are 1997 because ive seen the stamp on top of powerhead.

280's run o-ring heads.
Both, the 280 has alternator mounts cast into the block, and as you said that motor has the older non o-ring heads. Also they didnt make the 280 in 1997.

The 260 has higher ports than the 280 (but not as high as a drag) but not much meat taken out of the exhaust chest. Therefore alot can be gained by cutting the exhuast chest. The 280 has a cut exhuast chest similar to a drag but has lower ports than the 260. Therefore to get big gains from a 280 you need to do port work. Doing port work is alot more difficult and costly than meerly cutting the exhaust chest as these motors have a nicasil coating on the cylinder walls.

If its had the exhaust chest cut to 280 specs with the 260 porting and raised compression it should be well pokey. Top pinned pistons too. Well worth a look I reckon.

Standard compression should be around 135 PSI, 145 to 150 if its tuned.

Look closely at the block and particularly the front half for welded up holes and repairs.
