Seem to remember a 16ft Ring from Whitstable in the late 80's/early 90's that was fitted with either a 2.4 efi or Mod VP, that must have been feckin quick

I bet most phantoms run more horsepower than reccomended, My p18 had over 300hp and handled great !

I'm waiting for CC's comment on this as he has/had a 17 footer with a 200 on the back.

I think most boats could happily run more than their stated max HP. With the Fletchers I've driven I'd say that you could add 50% more horsepower than spec without any handling or flex problems. The main problem with over-engining is that there is then too much weight on the transom & the thing keeps landing on it's ass. I guess that's where you start looking at a bow tank.

You say that but a 135 V6 Merc will weigh pretty much the same as a 2.5 300 Drag and all the ones in between!!!

Yeh, you're right of course In fact Honda's website shows a BF150 as weighing 7Kg less than a BF115!

I was thinking more of 'ickle' boats. The Merc 75 on my boat weighs about 40% more (extra 39Kg) than the currently recommended 60Hp max. (75HP was max when I bought mine; they changed it the next year to 60HP) It lands on it's ass all the time. At rest with 4 blokes in, the water level is about 2 inches above the top of the transom! I'm thinking that it might be a better 'all-rounder' with the smaller engine.

I recently had a blat in a 17 foot Fletcher bowrider with a Merc 125 on the back (boat was rated at 130HP max). It felt to me like it needed at least a 150 on the back but in terms of Mercs this is going from 4cyl to V6 & adds another 30-40kgs to the transom. As Fletchers (& similar all-rounders) tend to to quite flat at the arse-end, I would imagine that big engines on these type of boats would make for a bumpy ride, whereas it would make much less difference in a deep-vee like a Phantom.

Captain; what was your 17 like?

What does it handle like though, especially when it's bumpy? Does it feel tail heavy?

Got any pictures?

To be honest it feels ok but i spend most of my time on a local river which is always pretty smooth...iit gets a bit twitchy over 60mph & starts to chine walk...was revving at 6000rpm when i got it to 68mph so i recokon i could put a steeper prop on it & get it over 70mph if i had the balls to do it...hutchy thinks its got a 2:1 gearbox on it...I also have to be careful with weight distribution when i have passengers as the engine is offset about 2" to counter torque so it tends to ride on one side if i don,t get it right...heres a pic

Ive been trying to get my mate to put something more juicey on his 155 GTO as it only has an 80hp Poo-Band on the back but he's not convinced as its already "over powered" Because the little sticker on the dash says so

Not an Arrowsport; it's an Arrowstreak. It's about 6" longer & a foot wider than the Arrowsport.

According to the info I've got the Arrowsport can take 80HP max; the Arrowstreak (albeit a slightly later version) 90HP max.

I think your mates Arrowsport will take more than 80HP, especially as his Merc 80 will be pre ICOMIA and so probably actually about 70-75HP equivalent. My Arrowflyte, which is only 14'2", handles the 75HP Merc just fine in terms of power. The problem is that the engine seems too heavy for the boat.

Contrast the pictures below where DJB's boat with twice the recommended horsepower sits quite nicely on the water & my Arrowflyte with exactly the (at the time) recommended max power sits semi-submerged!
