Revenger Mediterranee Race Boat For sale
Revenger Mediterranee 27' 'Lite Relief' T22 Race Boat For sale. Low hours Mercruiser 330HP engine, Edelbrock Torker inlet manifold, rebuilt Holley 750 double pumper carb, rebuilt Bravo 1 outdrive, Stainless Marine exhaust manifolds. Outdrive needs new gimbal bearing. The boat is fitted SBS galvanised trailer, needs brakes replacing. Fitted with intercoms. All usual safety equipment for race boat: Kill switches, automatic and manual fire extinguishers. £7000 may part ex. depends what it is. Russell

Hi Gaz,
Sorry about the nudge! That's when the gimbal bearing went and wouldn't go in or out of gear. I couldn't believe the timing!! With all the time and money spent replacing or rebuilding all the mechanicals and then the only part not replaced to go 'tits' right at the very start!!! I'm not feeling too enthusiastic about working on it again at the moment, hence it's for sale. If it doesn't go, i'll have a look at it in a few weeks time and may be enter the Cowes-Poole-Cowes??

Are you sure you're talking about the gimbal bearing though? I don't see how that would stop you going in or out of gear.

Hi Kerry,
The gimbal bearing was so bad it was shaking the whole boat at low revs and looks a right mess now. A broken throttle spring keeping the revs too high may also have stopped it going into gear. The outdrive seems okay as far as I can see without having to strip it down. A new bearing and test run is the easiest way to find out? Regards Russ

Russ, if it was shaking about then you really need to check the engine alignment when you replace the bearing. I assume you did when you dropped the engine back in? Use the proper tool, a broomstick is not a suitable substitute
Are the mounts in good order?
As you check the alignment it's good practice to turn the engine over a few degrees whilst checking to make sure the drive coupling hasn't got any off centre in it.
The gimbal should only get to a stage of a noticeable rumble particular on steering lock before you realise it's fecked.
I think I'd be checking the ujs for wear at the same time and make sure you haven't got play on the top bearing on the drive.
And don't forget to line up the grease hole on the new gimbal as it goes in as the only real reasons for one going is worn ujs, bad alignment or water in the bearing.
If you've had water around it all then check the gear selector cable through the shield is free running too while it's off.

Hi Kerry,
I had the engine aligned by Mike Wills Marine in Poole as I haven't got an alignment tool. It's got solid mounted engine mounts due to the nature of it's use, so shouldn't have moved, but I will check. Hopefully all else is okay when I check it all. Cheers.
