Wanted - Outboard mounting bolts
Hi All,
I need four sets of bolts for mounting up my outboards...
2 sets at about 6" long to mount the lifters to the transom
2 sets about 2" long to mount the motors to the lifters. I may double bolt the engines to the lifters if they're not crazy expensive.
I was told they may be as much as £19 a bolt over here, surely not?
Anyone know somewhere good to get them, or could anyone give me a pric via PM?

Had a quick look at your extreme today, only saw it breifly in the UK. Looks lovely, very jealous! How are you gonna keep your stainless steering and drive clean, is she antifouled?

bought that ultra sonic antifoul thing, Don't think it's working too well though but battery has run out a few times so that may have something to do with it.
Going to take it out next week and see how she's faring.

Ahh, that's interesting then! I was looking into one of those for quite a while for the cat. Right up until i found out they don't work with wooden boats!
From what i can see, the most important thing by far is the mating to the bottom of the hull. One of a companies did a solar charger for the unit, probably any solar charger big enough would do? If we get enough sun that is!
Failing that you could demand 3 hour lunchbreaks every day to take the boat out and keep it charged!

I've got a solar panel I'm going to velcro to the cover and a charger with a digital read out for each battery and overcharge protection ect... I paid a lot of attention to cleaning the mounting point and then spread a thin layer of resin so it was 100% flat which also holds the retaining nut down. I've even got some matting over this nut to ensure it doesn't come loose but will have to check on it.
I did note my bilge has some flat reinforcing within it under the engine and made sure I didn't attach the unit here, but will have to ask tony exactly how it's constructed. Maybe I've made a mistake, who knows. I will have to find out before I start slating it.
I'm not sure if it's the speed and usage that's currently keeping it clean. There's definitely some slime there.

When we rigged the XS we found these people pretty good for stainless. You will have to give them the specs as they don't seem to know too much about boats, but the product was always good, and not too bad on price.
Not sure if they do mail order, but worth asking.

Ok, thats all good...
Do they have to be 1/2" or can they be a metric equivalent? I'm assuming they need to be high tensile or can i use normal stainless bolts? I've always just used normal merc jobs but with needing 4 sets that's a pricey way to do it this time! Don't wanna risk losing an engine though!

I don't see why they can't be metric (13mm), but just make sure you get the best quality stainless (A4) and always use copper grease when putting together. Stops the threads from binding, beleive me you don't want to find out the hard way, coz if it sticks, it's a b*stard of a job to get undone.
There is a proper name for the 'thread lube' but I'm pretty sure copper grease is the same stuff.

Metric is rather course (the thread) for that job. The correct imperial ones are the fine option, 1/2" UNF (Unified Fine), as apposed to 1/2" UNC (Unified Course) especially if bolting 2 metal parts together (as apposed to bolting through nice compresable transom timber)

Makes sense to me. So if i get UNC stainless will that be ok, or do they definately need to be high tensile?
Am i right in thinking i should be double bolting both the lifters to the transom and the engines to the lifters?
Sorry to sound o.t.t. but i'm a touch concerned that i get everything right with this build!

The UNC thread is even more course than ISO Metric. Idealy you want UNF.

Larby,
would not use standard copper grease on saddle bolts,
alloy,stainless steel and copper grease not a good mix
when i worked on Condors we had a grease specfic for stainless
pop into M&GE they should have it,
cannot remember what it was called, we used to use it on the bolts for the water jets,

Bostic make a thing called "Neverseize" nickle based which I find works well, the higher content of copper is normally found in Rocosil which is used in high temp applications.
I'd use the bolts that are recommended 13mm or 1/2". UNF is better for tighinging up & less subject to vibration but then both the L&S lifter & the Stainless Marine come with 1/2" UNC & I have had no issues, but make sure you use a Nylock & make sure it's in safety by 1 1/2 threads through the insert.
