Can anybody explain breifly the difference between standard carbs and race carbs and what sort of performance advantage might be gained?

thanks........

Carbs

Allan, not sure there is a diference, I don't think merc makes a 'racing carb' as such. I have been reading a lot on this on S&F lately, trying to get rid of a bad acceleration bog on my engine.

If your trying new carbs on a 2.5 try a set of wh 15's or wh 20's these are old 2.4 big bore carbs and should work better on the 2.5 with it's more low end power.

Try searching on s&f carbs & T-Rex, he knows his stuff on carbs.

What kind of intake on your engine? Horizontal or vertical, how many reeds? Are you planning on any mods to it?

There are loads of different mercury carbs, depending on year and model of engine, some are better for certain applications than others. WH15's and 20's are old 2.4 carbs but are the best power makers as they have larger bores than the newer stuff. However for economy idling, starting and low end power some of the newer carbs may be better. Some modles of carbs also have lean spots. 2.4 carbs will work on a 2.5 but need to be jetted accordingly. When jetting you cant make comparisons across different modles of carbs with regard to jet sizes. For example WH20's use smaller main jets than WH22's to achieve the same fuel air ratio.

I think some of the race motors such as the Bridgeport had slosh tubes and baffles installed in their carbs to eliminte fuel starvation in high G turns.

I run a set of WH20's ;)
