ive decided to keep my phantom and spend a few quid on it,im going to join barrow powerboat club and do some circuit racing.im still waiting for details so can anyone tell me what to expect ie lenght of race, rules,do all boats race in same class etc.also im having a new engine fitted and the guy who's preparing it has recomended wire steering, the old fashioned type on pulleys, will this be up to the job?

Wire steering is used to give good feedback, mainly use on Cats and some bat boats.
I would probably stick to using hydrualic on a P18.
What class are you going to enter!

all 99 %of are 18/20/21s running circuit or offshore for last 25 years in north.run with wire with large horses on 18 you,ll be up the dock wall.
you wont find hydraulic on any of any other boats there ,only under my bench in scrap pile ,taken more off than fitted for this type of racing.

Hutchy - Just out of interest whose boats in OCR and Offshore (I presume you mean Class 3?) have you fitted wire steering to? We don't see much of that south of Watford!

didnt mention ocr or class 3.talking about dock racing or winderemere.carrmill etc.
to date 4 x16s 15 x 18s 2x21, 1 air entrapment,3 f1 cats ready for barrow next year 3 in work shop all on wire .1 21 0n ride guide.
there is racing outside south coast club racing(nationals).
hydraulic has its place offshore, not for the racing set up for next year at barrow.

Ahh ha not OCR then!
No experience with circuit racing, so take you word for it.
Does cable give you a better lock to lock ratio?
Racing on Windemere? haven't they stopped that after this year.

You could engineer what ever lock to lock ratio you want with hydraulic, or even buy a Capalino helm pump (adjustable displacement)

Yeh I run a capalino on mine...altho as you increase the lock to lock ratio the steering does become stiffer.

Well it would, wouldn't it, as you're decreasing your mechanical advantage over the motor.

ramsden dock barrow new venue for windemere.
started this game 79 rigging phantoms/first v200s.
have done hell of alot since, from first mod vp in85, first 2.5 91.
along with racing in most classes upto 6 litre.
ocr lads raced with us in 1990,s in dunoon ,ian blacker, nik basch etc, surgest ask them how our wired phantoms go.
ratio on wire changed by helm size.pulley no,s.

gota go lot of customers to let know got it wrong after 25 years and alot of boats need re rigging.

ROOFER nice to see you listen ,wire steering ready next friday

take alook around the boats in front ,pete&dave, roy,r hill ,to name afew, all on wire.
hold my hand up, do fit hydraulic to most ribs 20ft plus, not fast enough to warrant good steering, usually asked for by females or trannys from gay bars in blackpool

proposed

hutchy

i have just been to a offshore meeting,it has been proposed to have slightly shorter courses, and another proposal is to offer 2litre production boats to race with offshore boats. if accepted do you know of any northern boats that would be interested.
