[Foolish]

Which if any course would you reccomend for Mrs Foolish & I to take ? ( + 2 girls 9 & 13 if poss) ("Practical" rather than "Theory" would be prefered,)

Our boating comprises of the "occasional" crawl up the Thames ( ) but mainly days out in the Solent (no hazzards in Littlehampton)

I am sure "Mrs Foolish" and the rest of the family would feel more confident to explore further if they knew more about boat handling and navigation as "Mrs Foolish" was rather alarmed to discover that there was a distinct lack of signposts and that the sea is not flat !

Did my vhf/dsc which was although necessary (for my licence) was a complete load of "Bollix" !!!, ... far more learnt from "Googling"

Looking to get some "Practical" skills for the missus & kids so they feel more in control allowing me to "relax" and "chill-out" (sometimes) when there is more than a "Ripple" on the water

They are all keen but lack confidence, I don't want to be in the position of teaching "my mother to drive" ( did that when Mrs foolish was on a "provisional" : L : ...another story ) would rather they learnt the basics from an independant....

Any offers ??

it was ok,got a bit boring at times,especially the chart work.but picked up some usefull tips etc.

powerboat level 2 was a lot more intresting simply because i was out in the boat.

"Examiners" always favour the "Female" sex .... she ( Mrs Foolish) even scored more points at the "Track Day" ( arranged for my 30th birthday) ...... :*******:

Even though "she" was 3 laps down by the end

TO BAD I WAS NOT ACCOMPANIED TO "BALA" RAFTING CENTRE ( GOOD CHOICE "MR'S" ) .... on my 40th .... Feck that was cold !!!

re: learning to fly

Give Neil Holmes a call, he does all levels of training, inc level 1 & 2 powerboat, he will also impart more real knowledge about driving technique etc. than any of the regular 'nobby' cammo trousered, bowie knife wealding ribnobba type schools, coz he's actulay done a bit of fast boating in his time.

He's based in Southampton.

Jonny, you make me laugh!

I haven't ever seen any type of powerboat instructor weilding a bowie knife

I've only ever found that they are well experienced boat handlers with a genuine deisre to teach.

Like Neil's new web site. I might have to give him a call to take my skills beyond the RYA syllabus??

(His gallery shows RIBs going PAST the Needles - that's not usual RIBnobba practise!!!!! )

If Neil is too busy or there are no other friends of Jon Fuller available then might I suggest David Manning or Tom Pedersen from Fluid tuition are both excellent own boat trainers with a wealth of experience!

Your family needs to do the PB2 because the basic theory is important to keep them safe on the water, in your boat however the majority of the theory could easily be done on the water,

Your families welfare is at stake when selecting a trainer so make sure you ask pertinent questions before selecting your trainer.

Such as;

Do they prefer a Leatherman or a Victroinix knife
Should you have white and yellow or yellow and grey upholstery with your yellow boat
Should you use a Henry or a Dyson vacuum cleaner for your cabin. Any Instructor that can't offer a good justification for going to the extra expense of a Cyclone type vacuum cleaner probably doesn't really understand powerboating
And finally where is the best place to get Camo trouser Marks and Sparks or Burtons.

Seriously though make sure you get someone who you feel will be able to communicate with your kids effectively and enthuse them for life.

I'd "second" David Manning... ….He is, according to my wife, my mate and his "girlie" a very likeable and knowledgeable instructor who make learning basic skills enjoyable… and that is important for first timers and family members..
