Fletcher Glastrons

I was looking at the Classic Glastron site and found this hidden in the archives.

I never knew Fletcher had a deal to make Glastrons under Licence.

And I always thought that the Royal Family were a bit boring, but after seeing this and hearing Charles slagging off the press at Cloisters last week...I am begining to get all patriotic.

Sadly true, my 9 year old went down the Lake in a K Class a couple of years ago, he said "Daddy, that was a weird thing to have to do to get Princess Annes autograph!"

What other royal connections have theere been with Powerboat Racing? I remember Prince Andrews ex Koo Stark raced in a P25 with Gina Campbell at Poole

Just done a bit more reading and the booklet says that Bob Hammond met Norman Fletcher at the 1966 London Boat Show.

It says that Fletcher was one of the UK's leading small boat builders at the time. Apparently, it took Hammond several years to convince Fletcher to build his boats.

Fletcher Boats built Glastrons for a number of years under licence firstly at their factory in Aldridge and then at their new factory in Burntwood. My parents were friends of Norman & Val Fletcher and often took holidays together with a development boat usualy in tow.

I have a very clear memory of a flat out trip around the Isle of Wight alegedly "fishing" with both Fred Shaw (down to race in the Cowes Torquay in Red Alligator and Norman Fletcher ( no slouch as a racing driver) driving an inboard Mercruiser powered Glastron. This was an interesting baptism to powerboating!


One of the other claims to fame for Fletchers is that they were to suffer the ignominy as being the only exhibitor at the Earls Court Boat Show to ever to have on one of their boats stolen from their stand - this was even more sensational when understanding the stand was on the first floor!
