inspection hatch on p21?

My mates got a p21 roughly 1985 and its got a square hole that looks like an inspection hole in the floor in front of the tank? is this normal and wots it for? Also the boat was grey in colour did they make many in grey coz ive never seen another one??

maybe for storage or more likely to enable you to get pipes under the floor for bow tank etc. Cyco has one in his bernico for that very same reason
