Square A on the checkerboard below is the exact same shade of grey as square B.

If you dont believe me use an art packege of some sorts and cut out a bit of either square and then move it into the other square. You could even print it out and then fold the paper so that the squares are next to each other.

Thats cool mate! just opened it up in Fireworks and it gives the same colour ref' for both squares! nice.
 
Now, I have used the same colour to join the 2 squares together, do you see how the shade apears to change? but it is all one colour.

It simple when you think about it. The light and dark squares are both darker in the shadow but you dont really thing about the shadow because you mind is fixed on the checking
 
Try printing it out and then folding the paper half way across each square so you can place them next to each other. Its even wierder as there's no computer involved.
