jack plate/engine height?

Rite guys im fitting a manual jack plate to my phantom at the weekend! wots the best way to go about setting the base engine height? is it best to set the jack to half its travel and position it on the transom so the point of my gearbox is inline with the bottom of the boat therefore i can jack past it if i want and lower in the water if i want?

I'd set it with the cavitation plate level with the bottom of the hull, and establish speed and rpm's for every cm or 1/2 inch you go up. A water pressure gauge is prefered.

bit low?!when my jackplate is all the way up the point is 1 inch above the pad

IMO you should mount your engine on the jack plate so that you can not go more than 1 1/2" above the pad. this will allow you to go to around 4" below which is plenty.
if you haven't got hydraulic steering any higher than level will be almost impossible to hang on too.

all the way down its about 4 inch down , i cant have it that far down tho because ive got hydraulic steering so it will crush it!

Just bolt it higher up on the lift, there's loads of holes on both the lift and the engine saddle.
