jack plate

Went out on the boat today Hit 75mph! well chuffed! BUT i bent yes bent the jack plate! Its a bob machine shop manual adjust and supposed to be capable of 3oohp! Has anyone encountered this with these plates before? Im not very pleased with it!

I take it hes broken a few then! Cant believe ive bent it its made of 12-14mm thick ally!

I havent taken any pics yet but its bent the 12mm stud that you use to adjust the engine height on the right hand side if you look at the engine in the boat! And theres a block about 1" by1" square and about 3" long that comes out of the plate that the engines bolted to, its pushed that up and bent the top corner in about 20mm! The trouble is that now its bent its weakened so even if i get it straightened it will always bend there now!

My personal experience with these types of lifters hasn't been good - however that is just us!

The 300hp lifters or jack plates are more than capable of coping with that horsepower in some circumstances, however they were designed for use originally for use on Bass fishing boats in the US and not offshore racing! In my opinion the Stainless Marine Gorilla 1 is / was the best on the market if you're racing or a very heavy duty leisure user, but the Bobs and other makes are fine for leisure use and race applications, I know several people who have used them for years in offshore and had no complaints at all - just ask Adam, he sells them and uses the product himself. If you drive a boat hard in rough conditions, then unfortunately things break!

I think over the years I've seen most makes of lifters fail at some time or another - often through poor installation or lack of maintenance. They can also fail as a result of damage to engine mounts / transom / steering in the first place.

Certainly they do offer advantages - but as I would say to anyone buying one - you need a real reason to fit one - as they are something else to look after and also add weight / change handling etc.

We have used Bobs M S lifters for some time with really good results - including use on one of the best rough weather boats out there - with very few problems.

I have a Cookee special, it's a Gorilla 1 with Gorilla 2 ram, and it survived Ramsgate very well indeed! I'm not sure if they are available, but I can get Stainless Marine stuff, so if anyone is interested I'll get you a price / availability.

As Adam says - I've raced against him in the rough as a driver and navigator, and those Bobs plates never had a problem on his boats, it's just that we never got on with them!
