Hello All,

Now I do realise that me buying an engine for the Phantom is becoming as much of a Joke as the actual boat itself, but; fear not i may be moving ever closer:yawn:

I seem to have finally found one; and providing someone doesnt come along and spoil the party, i can afford it.

I've spoke to the very nice yank gentleman whom is selling it and have seen some pics and got lots of info...all checks out pretty cool.....well enough to satisfy me that i wont be getting a crate of junk arrive a few weeks from now.

However, one point of slight concern is that the sportsmaster seems to have a whole drilled through it! I am led to believe that this is done to help relieve back-pressure from the exhaust at certain RPM? its an ex bass boat engine so would it be to help during prolonged idle periods??

should i be worried? or just stop being such a :wank: and do me best to make it mine?

thx in advance

well, i was hoping for a bit more than that!

do you know anyone who may know?

scream n fly

I was gunna say that.

Seems a bit odd though done it, normally they drill the bottom of the leg for exhaust relief.

Exhaust relief doesn't do alot if anything for performance just like changing the tuner length, shape etc.

lower unit holes

It seems like an expensive bit of kit to go drilling holes in when the holes could heve been put in the mid and achieve the same effect, which is mainly noise!

If it bothers you that much you could get it welded up, there was a neat way of relieving the exhaust posted by Talon 2.5 on scream and fly or a bobs snout is not too bad.

Another thing, I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it or if it's even relevant, has the engine your considdering had a lot of exhaust chest work done to it. I don't know how heavy the phantom is but if the chest has been extesively worked the engine may not have enough low end to push a heavy boat out of the water.

Thankyou all very much.

I believe it hasnt had any exhaust work but i've just tracked down the original owner and will ask.

worst ways.....i'll get the holw welded up.

cheers
CC:)

if you buy it, will you shutup?:D

I've sent you the link before!!

-Compresion 150 +/- 1 on all 6
-Leak down?
-powerhead never been touched (apparantly)

checked out price on NADA guides.......seller reckons it should be 20% above guide price as its mint

erm.....think so!

i've been told it meets all the specifications and is tuned to the mercury factory manual

Capt the holes are not a problem if they bother you that much just get two blanks machined up that havea small shoulder on them and bolt them in place.
I would not mess around modifing a standard leg for exhaust relief, at the price of a 20" offshore midsection second it's worth just putting one stright on.
there are plenty of these kicking around as well.

captain there's a couple of nice motors on boats and outboards.

so should i steer clear then....or is 60 thou not likely to be a problem with decent fuel?:dizzy:

Its a shame theres not more time, I always feel more comfortable with Knowledge of a subject.

Again, being the halfwhitt that i am, I'm unsure exactly what the main disadvantages would be of having a motor with skimmed heads?

and why i should steer clear........

if i compare this scenario to that of buying the phantom.......they are both cases whereby i've looked quite long enough......I like the idea of the product i may get & the price @ which i may get it. But most of all I think i'd be prepared to just shrug my shoulders if it isnt exactly as advertised.

trouble is, it is a lot of cash for me + the defineing differences between this engine and the Phantom is that enough people had reassured me it'd be a good purchase & that; combined with my own thoughts, willed me to scoled me ole chap in a piping bowl of Birds Finest! and also, i had comeback with Trios:)

you guys are sitting on the fence far too much!

150psi is about as high as you want to go on normal 95RON unleaded but it should be fine. The upside is your 225 will be more like 230 to 235. the downside is more power will mean a shorter life, not by much though as its not a big increase. Heads arent big money to replece if you wanted to return it to standard. However if the guy selling it said it was standard and clearly it isnt could it be modified in other ways too, who's to know :)

60 thou is a lot. Are these skimpy alloy heads happy with that amount of material removed? But maybe yer just bein' flippant.
