How much will a brand new 300PM set me back??
can't seen to find any pricing online..
Dunno why, but merc don't sell racing engines here in DK??

Are they just as (un)reliable as the 2.5 ;)

thx

$19,300 USD with 20" offshore mid & s'master 1.62 lower unit Thats US Dealer Ex Works approx + shipping + tax
2.5 are fine depends how you run em, consumer is fine, race is highly strung for the extra RPM obviously with the different mapping. Think the interval is about 50hrs on the 2.5 race for a puldown look, which if you are using for pleasure tiz a bit daft. leave the race motors for what they are designed for. RACING.

so I should go for the 300PM??
or is this also know as a RACING engine :)

tHAT ABOVE WAS FOR AN 300x

THANK YOU MATT JOLTED THE CELLS THERE

;)
ok, so it should be an PM 300 (no x ) :)
I justed had a look at merc website an appaerently the "only" 300, is a 300X?!

Now I am totally confused..

Not fully up on em as I'm only intrested in the X but I think the basic story is as follows:
first launch as 300
Then 2 Options offered the 300 & the 300X
Then finally dropped the 300 and only the 300X is available.
Motor grurs will no doubt chip in.
If you were looking to repower I think I'd be tempted with the 250XS but what extra would that give you over what you have now, is it really worth it?

Hmmm ??
no guru's chipped in yet;)

but you are probably right - it not worth the extra 50-75 hp .. :(

That's probably cos blufin is about right.
IMHO, the X is an xs/opti motor with the opti bit stripped off and reverted to conventional injection. This is shown by the block, intake layout & oil injection similarities. It looks to me like the only thing preventing the 300x being an opti is the revs, the 250xs only revs to 6200 (although curiously the longer shaft models rev only to 5800. ), I wonder if they've hit a limit on the current opti technology preventing a 300xs.

Either way, I have to ask if all of the 300's are pretty highly strung motors - blufin, what is the expected life of an X between rebuilds?

This is, of course, just my own opinion, I don't own any of these things - perhaps one day I'll be rich enough. :D :D

Thoughts......
Firstly I'm having to make up a xx years break in the market & tech side of this, very fast learning curve a catching up quick

Talking to various people , experts, whatever I would have to sum it up as follows
300 turns out about 275Hp
300X about 327 + depending if you have a good one
Time between pulldows never got any answers but it much less than a 2.5 because it's not so highly stressed for want of a better term. Gasket set costs about as much as my car.
Burns about 17 gall us at 4700RPM where a lot cruise with em varies between 30 us gall & 38 Gall us an hour depending who you ask @ WOT
I was trying to get some info on the 2 saddle/swivel options but nobody seems to have had any problems with either one. Only one breakage on the non offshore one that I found out about.

I think it's a great motor but if you look at the hard fact the new 250XS will really give you @275 HP with a decent fuel return, still in production and deals available.
Are the extra ponies really required is the question you must ask ya'self
mmmhhhhhhhhhhhh I think so but I'm a bit of an :dizzy:

Edit: 250XS with a 20" section, 25" is tooooooooo long & lower reving as matt quite rightly states.

The longer shaft could suffer with a whiping problem, as that's a long downshaft to be unsupported spinning real fast.

that'd soon turn nasty once it started.
