Torquay was the venue for the final round of the OCRDA Aqua Adrenaline Tour over the weekend of the 7th and 8th October. Originally this round was to be held in Plymouth but it was switched to Torquay which was also the venue for Round 1 in April.

Organiser Bob McCarthy has done an excellent job with the championship – the biggest fleet of powerboats racing in Europe – since splitting from the RYA last year. A fleet of 30 boats arrived at Torquay competing in 3 classes – Class 3 up to 150HP; Class 2 up to 200HP; Class 1 over 200HP. The boats reaching speeds of between 65-90mh over quite tight course ensures plenty of thrills and spills for competitors and spectators alike.

Saturday provided very overcast weather and the boats headed out for a couple of familiarisation laps a little later than the scheduled 2.15pm start for the first race. There was drama from the off and with the choppy conditions in Torbay, the race was interrupted by 4 red flags. Amongst the boats that went over were Fair Play – Jeremy Gibson and The Rock – Phil Hancock. Fortunately all crews were safely recovered - just very wet and bruised. Because of the delays caused by these incidents, it was decided to end the days proceedings with no result being declared.

Sunday saw perfect conditions – lovely sun glistening off the flat water – Torquay was living up to its reputation as the English Riviera. There were of course casualties from Saturday. Phil Hancock was looking very bruised and battered and would not take part in The Rock. Graham Reeder in Ananab Racing had mechanical problems – broken compressor - and had withdrawn.
Sunday had a packed programme of 3 OCRDA races and two British Water Ski and Wakeboard races. The racing was fast and furious and gave the crowd of spectators gathered on Haldon Pier plenty to get excited about. There was only one interruption when Team Rooster – Jamie Stickler and Ed Lau – rolled. Both crew were safely retrieved and the boat towed in.

Torquay saw the final races for Brian Peedell competing in the V24 Batboat D.B. Express. Brian indicated earlier in the season that he would be retiring after many successful seasons of competition. And what a way to finish his racing career – he won all 3 races in Torquay and has been crowned National Class 1 Champion for 2017. Big congratulations and Brian is hoping to be back next year providing safety boat support for the OCRDA races. The races will not be quite the same without the roar of the V8 Volvo Penta engined Batboat. The boat is up for sale and hopefully someone will purchase this proven race winner to compete in next season.

With an awesome display of fly boarding and supercar’s provided by H R Owen Ecurie – including a Lotus Exige Sport 380, Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4SV, and McLaren MP4-12C – there was plenty to keep everyone entertained.

What speeds do the class 1s run at?

My rig was running low to mid 70's with a motor straight out the box, should see at least 80 next season with a couple more prop options and some other planned upgrades.

Quick boats then. We’re you still competitive with low 70s?

Awesome pics and video - looks great, well organised

Not so competitive in the calmer conditions as had no other prop options other than a 4 blade 25"p x 15".
Of course and my experience as this was only my 3rd race and am still very much in the learning process..!!
