The OCRDA Aqua Adrenaline Tour returned to Brixham for the final event of the year, Round 7, over the weekend of the 16th and 17th October. The powerboat and jet ski race series held Round 3 in the port in mid June. The weather was perfect, with the racer’s enjoying two sunny, autumnal days. On Saturday, the sea condition’s off the Breakwater were ideal with just a slight swell. However, Sunday was more of a challenge, and although not visibly rough, the driver’s were reporting unusual currents that, further out in the Bay were throwing the boats high into the air. Highlighting the condition’s, Scot’s racer Davie Maclennan and Paula Brown in Chasin Tail were forced to retire from the second race on Sunday with a cracked hull which resulted in them taking on a lot of water. Paula hopes to do a full season in 2022 with Anthony Walker in Kamo Krazee in F3.

It was a frustrating day for Justin Copeland and Josh Lovelock on the debut race weekend for their newly acquired Bernico, Jam First. Their original boat, also Jam First, a Phanton 18, split its Hull during Round 5 at Torquay. The Cornish racer's suffered an electrical problem in their engine which required some frantic repairs before race one on Sunday, and then engine gremlins re-appeared in race two. They were running their spare engine, whilst their main engine is being re-built.

It was a very successful return to racing for Chris Brown and Peter Snell in their boat, Chris Brown Marine. The North Devon based marine engineer won both Formula 1 races on Saturday, and also race 1 on Sunday. Due to other commitments, this was Chris’s first race weekend of 2021, and he had not entered this year’s championship. He is looking forward to a full year of competition in 2022, and on his Brixham performance, he will be a strong contender for the Formula 1 title.

The 2021 F1 Class had already been secured at the previous round in Caernarfon by Kingsbridge based Jeremy Gibson and Malachy Browne in Smokey & The Bandit. For F1 runner up spot, it was between two highly experienced crews - Exeter based master thatcher Craig Temple-Murray / Paul Scott in Matahari 4 and Kingsbridge garage proprietor Bob McCarthy / James Goldsmith in If Only. Craig had a consistent weekend with a brace of third and fourth places, whilst Bob suffered mechanical issues on Saturday and only managed a brace of second places - Craig clinched it by 19 points.

In the Formula 2 Class it has been an exceptional season for the crew of Fatboy Twin – Andy Childs and Exmouth’s Mark Hayward. They have competed in all 28 races and finished their season with another four Class wins at Brixham to clinch the F2 Title. In second place it was the father and son pairing of Malc and Bradley Dopson in 66 Racing.

In the F3 Class, the crew of One Step Beyond – Neil Williams and Connie Jones – clinched the title on home soil at the previous Caernarfon round, and elected not to race at Brixham.

In the Sport Class, it was Scottish based hotelier, Italian Alfredo Alongi and David Finlayson in their boat Taz-A-Mania who took the title.

This year, the power boats have been joined by a large contingent of jet ski racers competing in three classes. In the 300 Am (Amateur) Class, it was Robert Peters who was triumphant from Rob Mcrae and Phil Howarth.

In the 300 Pro (Professional) Class, two of the UK’s fastest racers battled it out. In the end, it was Newbury’s Carl Lofthouse – 2018 P1 AquaX Euro Tour Champion - who came out on top from Ethan Winchester – the AquaX 300AM Champion in 2019 – just 90 points separating them in the end with 200 points awarded for a race win.

Charles Mcilwraith clinched the 200 Class from Kevin Ashley and Richard Cable.

If you are interested in competing, or just spectating, check out the very informative OCRDA web site www.ocrda.com The organisation’s slogan is “Where the action is!” - it sure is, and there will be more Torbay action in 2022.
