What's the general concensus on having an online shop within boatmad for specialist parts, such as Salmon controls/pickups, custom sea strainers :dizzy: , instuments, etc, etc?

been giving it some thought, and reckon a central place for the less commonly found rigging components might be a goer.


Opinions please.

K4+ has a pretty good online shop and stocks a lot of cool uncommon things and might do you a discount depending on what u want and how much.
 
I'm not after anything myself, I'm talking about 'producing' stuff, as in having parts made to a particular design to fill the gaps that there are currently in our market.
 
Reckon an online catalogue would be good, but not sure about online shop - the type of products are probably 'specialist' enough that ya would be unlikely to buy them without getting all sorts of details and specs first, and no doubt trying for an extra bit of discount too. Depends whether it's just gonna showcase the odd few bits, or whether you're trying to create an extensive online powerboat chandlery.

I Have also thought about this a lot but dont have the knowledge or know the right people to get the goodies. I think it would really hit off internet shopping is the biggest thing these days

Pretty much what K4+ is! We are importing various speciality goods and also manufacturing some of our own components where there is a need. The range is constantly expanding and should be some more lines added soon.

In the future K4+ will carry on providing this service, with design work being under Adam Younger Design.

Any RIBs that we build or other boats will be under another name - that is not fully decided on at the moment. Depends on many factors including some potential investment and some potentially exciting projects that could go ahead.

Dunno is the answer.
Ask a question how many times will you rig a boat.
Guess the people here do it more than the norm. Guys doing lots will have their trade accounts & suppliers. So would that only leave the individual on his own project?
Communications & deliveries available through the internet the difficulties are non existant today for overseas supply. Guess the nut kicker would be attractive pricing which is becoming more & more the marketing issue of the day.

John, I hear you, the parts I'm talking about are the things that i've found it hard, or way too expensive when sourcing myself.

In a lot of cases, the awareness that they exist in the first place is greatest problem facing a buyer.

Make it a suppliers directory in a subscribed area on the site

I know from the hobby site I set up years ago, grew so much that to cover the costs of keeping things going can set you back a bit from ya own pocket. For me it required a dedicated replacement server, with a much hiher bandwith
(If anybody wants advertisng on it I pull down 1.4 million hits a year, aerospace shite)

Half the battle in getting stuff made is in the design & set up. If ya making one dont cost 5 times that to make five more. set up & tooling is ready. It's just a case of how long will the stock hang around.
Certainly there would be an instant market for a UK made incontrol foot throttle, & some of those very pretty single gear levers all nicley anodized

Steve Salmons control levers are first class, and his ballast valves are getting there,
Also his trim indicators are very nice indeed.
so they'd just need to be 'stocked'. (he can rarely supply quickly when needed)

UK In-Control, yes, agree.

Compact & sexy S/S & ali Sea Strainers, mebbe similar to the Marine Machine ones with a lovely spin-on anodised lid, with the option of semi-custom port arangement would be nice.
 
Talking of strainers - how you getting on - sorted yet?
 
Ref any throttle.. maybe rather than the norm or top loaded, how about a back loaded so it could run fwd before the return to the motor / s. Make for a much cleaner tidy arragngement.
Name it the "BULLDOG LEADFOOT"

I have my fingers crossed for a completed pair on Friday.

They're gonna be a kinda custom version of the Malcolm Cole / Oval316 ltd / Simon Wood-Power ones.

The basic shape of them means they're gonna be a fkkn tight fit.
 
Been talking with Steve Salmon today, and I'm gonna stock some of his specialist stuff, bow tank pickups (2 types), control levers, trim indicators etc, and have a showcase here on boatmad.

plus he's gonna look into producing a new foot throttle along the lines of the 'IN-CONTROL' type fitted to my boat.

Steve is happy to offer a 20% discount to BM members.

yeah, they're luvvly.

I must say tho', Pauls foot throttle on his Mariner 3.0 is the lightest 'regular' style I've found, really quite smooth & light.
