Painting galvanised Trailers

Anyone done it? And does it last. I know you must have to etc primer it, was thinking of hammerite witha etc primer

I think you can get Hammerite that you can paint stright on to a metal surface. Sure they sell it in Halfords.

Eaxcyly what i did i was told red oxide primer by Digby trailers. Used hammerite special metals primer (suitable for gavanised trailers) and then hammerites smooth.

Mine has stayed on!

Taz, don't do it. It'll be scabby in no time at all. Also, paint has difficulty adhering to zinc. There will be patches where the water will get through the paint, either because of bad adhesion or just wee bits of the inevitable damage. These bits will be sacraficial just like your engine anodes and the area will bubble up. The whole point of the galvanising is that it is sacraficial and it deteriorates gently. When you paint it, because there is limited access in these areas of damage the zinc gives itself up vigorously.

Been there, done it and certainly wouldn't do it again.

Whack your boat on the a pontoon for a couple of days, clean all the rust and crap of then get it re galved, its only around 80quid/t. (then cover it in miior polished stainless for a bit of bling)

Cleaned a trailer up 2 years ago with a sander then got it sprayed with an industrial micacious iron oxide (MIO) no breakdown yet but does chip, nice finish though.

Thers no rust on the trailer and it looks all good its a big yank one but i fancied it blue to match me boat

That's wot I used on top of me galvanising. Used for painting bridges. Give it time, the rust'll get it. 2 years is good though.

Got mine done with 'airless' spray, as JW says good for bridges but like all when the water gets under it it'll start failing and look cr*p again

Use a mini roller, much easier and a nicer finish!!!
