Twoz an SR-9 rib hull, with a V-24 canopy and partial deck.

Was gonna get a Wiesman surface drive, and two Iveco diesels running in series (one driving through the other, tandem).

I think the project got abandened when the rules for F1 rib changed.

ah i do remember the iveco badge on the side

What speed would that get?

dunno, the motors were fkkn massive, and bloody heavy. think they were circa 350 hp each, but I doubt they'd have ever got it all in (two straight six motors, and a gearbox!!.

Think the last I heard it was only gonna get one of them, so not very quick.

wot you want is a B-28 with one of the 1000hp motors like Neil's fitting in that Pro-V boat!..now that would move!

back in about 94/95, there was a B-28 running in class II with a 750 hp big block/Volvo drive. ran about 105mph I think

There is a US company promicing me 750HP in the same space as the current V24 engine.

Or there is a UK based builder who says he can tweak the current engine to produce over 500 HP.

As the drive can handle 1000hp, and I could use a E4 prop ( several of those around, some even with an E3 stamp:cool: ) or perhaps an E5 prop I think that could be a cool way to have a go at one or two of the current records, like the Round the Island record set by Puddyfoot. ( The record is only about 5 minutes off the current class legal speed! )

so whats he done abandoned it? could be a cool (firkin expensive) project

so how come you aint bought a leisure b28 jon, mind the interior looks a bit tacky.. be a good poker runer

Yeah, excellent, but I like my Phanny, it's more practical, and I have to have practicality coza me behatch.

I'd dearly love my 28 with the Mannerfelt B28 running surface under it! that would be a tool!!

Tiz all academic anyway, coz I canne afford one.

You might also want to speak with Bruce or John at Express Marine (the guys who built our Reefer Racing engines and Neil's provee engines).

Yeah, didn't want to say anything.

I know the 750hp motor in the B-28 I spoke of broke the vertical link a few times, however, the latest Volvo DPX as fitted to the D-6 may be stronger, as thats a monster diesel.

Hell, we broke the original DPX with 415 shp.

As you say though, the new one may be quite a different animal

Wasn't the B28 with the 750 driven by Dag Twist?

This depends on the engine.

A diesel produces a load of torque with the power, and it is tourqe that kills gearboxes.

A petrol does not.

So the theory is that the DPX drive can handle 1000P on a petrol engine. On a diesel Volvo only suggest the Kad42 for the DPX!

Volvo now do the D6 on a DPX, which is a lower revving, higher power than the cad42/44, so I presume they've strengthened them, but I would still think 1000hp is OTT, at least for offshore work. The Yanks regularly run 1000 hp through standard-ish Bravos, but only on lakes & rivers. Offshore use with 1000hp will snap one like a twig.

No they don't!

The new DPX is called DPR and Volvo reckon it is strengthened. Then again, they reckon lots of things. :)

As the Kad 42 stoped production 6 years ago, that dates my information somewhat.

Volvo Penta have told me directly that the DPX legs I have can take 1000HP in petrol. I want to push 750HP petrol, or 75% of their stated maximum.. That should be fine? Or is there something I dont know!

Volvo used to market both 500 & 600hp Big block packages with the DPX, but they withdrew them as they weren't popular, and I'm told they used to break drives!

The Volvo D6 350 bhp version that they currently mate to the DP and DPR drives makes about 645 ft/lbs of torque so I'd guess the DPR can handle at least that much.

Volvo in their blurb also says that these upgraded drives can handle 40% more torque than any previous drive. (I guess their referring to their own). Working the figures backward it's no wonder we broke drives with our lowly stock 502 435 bhp big blocks. The 500hp and 600hp motors must have eaten them for lunch.

So you are saying that the DPX will not handle 750 HP even though Volvo says it will handle 1000HP?

Seems like Dejavu all over again...:dizzy:

Is there *any* straight answers in the boat world?
