Phantom 18 ‘Heavy Mob’ For Sale
As we start ‘un-locking’ we’ve decided to sell our lockdown project Phantom 18 ‘Heavy Mob’ including engine and trailer as follows:
18 Phantom and 200hp 2.4 litre Mercury on an extended Rapide-Roller (we believe) two-wheel trailer (un-braked).
The boat is thought to be around 1988 (ish) mostly original and rigged with the following:
• Bow-transom d-rings (ski-eyes)
• Bow fairleads and original bow handle
• Original Argonweld fuel tank with sender, deck plate filler and breather in splash well
• Water separating fuel filter with drain
• Original Argonweld aluminium foot throttle
• Ultraflex rack and pinion steering (NFB type I think)
• Stainless Steel Ski pole and base (not fitted)
• Transom boarding ladder
• X2 Phantom bucket seats (not original to boat but sourced from a later Phantom 21)
• Manual Jack-Plate
• Original Bow tank with pick up and empty valve – no control fitted
• Rule 500 gph bilge pump
• Leisure Battery with isolator
• Original instrument pod with International II gauges (not wired or checked)
• Fire extinguisher
Mercury 200hp 2.4 litre
When the boat was purchased there was a crack in the lower unit. A later 1.87:1 lower unit was fitted (used). The original lower will come with the boat. Fresh lower unit lube less than 5 hours run time. It appears that the stator has been replaced recently with an aftermarket type. Carburettors and fuel system have been cleaned. The motor starts well and idles ok. It is a bit lumpy in the lower – mid-range but it picks up and clears performing very well. It appears the thermostats have been removed but no restrictors fitted in their place. The water pump impeller was checked and is ok but the housing and plate could use new gaskets. Oil injection has been removed but is still complete and will come with the motor. Mercury Quicksilver Laser II propeller 21” p included. There is also a spare cylinder head and Clymer workshop manual.
Trailer had a replacement axle fitted (used) and new bearings which have less than 100 miles running. These have been in the water a few times.
Overall:
The original gelcoat is tired and has been polished so many times in its 30+ years that the fibreglass is showing through in places. Hull is equally faded and needs time spent to fill and fair. Overall the boat is now a candidate for a respray. Underside and running surfaces need a lot of TLC from scratches and chips on the keel and spray rails. In its present condition it shows all its foibles. The dash has had the softwood repair removed and a section of 18mm marine ply bonded in place. The dash has been quickly filled where mild steel screws had been used and had to be drilled out also to repair where sections of dash chopped out for switch gear over the years. The transom has been chopped down at some point and the exposed top is soft so a rebuild is due. The boat had steel framed automotive high back sports seats fitted when we picked it up and these were removed and genuine Phantom low back bucket seats from a later boat fitted with stainless steel fixings. The original carpet was removed along with any other items and the control box, battery and bilge pump switch have been fitted to enable us to run the boat. There are sundry sections of the original upholstery around but these were only kept as patterns to show the original colour scheme.
Although now a running package the boat is being sold as a project for spares/repairs
The above is intended to be a fair appraisal of the boat to help save any confusion and time as we all have enough to contend with at the moment.
