Phantom 21 / 250xs

balance

When I started testing different props and rigging height I noticed that the balance in my boat was a bit of. The previous owner had scrapped the old original fueltank because it had started leaking and replaced it with the plastic red one in the picture above.

Every time I was out testing for top end I got my best results with the fueltank almost full (70L) and the backseat in place, she liked weight in the aft. So I had a new one made but made it high and so it would fit as far back as possible. This really changed how the boat rides in the water and now she goes up high out of the water and my wet surface is much smaller. But she is still a bit heavy in the bow, if I remove the plate keeping me from sliding under the deck in a crash, the speed goes up about 1 knot.

When I'm testing props the same thing shows again, the best running props on my P21 are the once with good bowlift. The best once I've tried are the Razor 3, Trophy+ 28 lab finish and a B&B Tempest+ 27p, while ET Lightning and Chopper don't work at all. She'l do 71 with the ET but the ride is not fun.

How are your boats balance, any similarities and/or tips?

ELK:
Looking forward to your visit in Sweden, I'l try and get boat up on the trailer so we can do a fall run in Stockholm archipelago:seaman:

Excellent plan, I'll bring my own gps max speed tracking equipment (iphone) and come back to report my findings to all the disbelieving English folk!!!

Prop

Hi
Try a 26 raker, you will have to change the bush and machine the hub to make it fit but they are fast props but a bit of a hand full,

John
If you had used my non cut down 24 raker you would probably have gone faster, but then again I'm surprised you didn't hit 120mph with a reddish prop !

In reality the prop would probably measure more than 27" it would be worth measuring the actual pitch !!

I ran 103 mph with a 26" 4 blade ET !

Believe 86 mph

Very good speed for the "big" Phantom 21....86 mph with a 250 XS, but I believe you. The 250 XS and 300 XS is a hot strong Mercury engine. It is still a 2 stroke, and the weight of it is not much more than a 2.5. The Phantom 21 copy boat with steps (built in Malta) reportedly hits 95 mph with the 300 xs!

I have a friend that has 3 rakers in different pitches that are modified for Merc but they are 15splines and I run 19splines :(

I'm thinking of ordering a new Razor 3 with some more bowlift but I don't know if it will hold as I just cracked the one I have.

There is also the new version of the Tempest A45.. I'd like to test that one!

We got 94 mph with a cut down Raker on Coniston with a 280 ROS on the race RIB - around 940kgs and 24' :)

You Tube Coniston

Nice run! Is that the Raceversion of the Seven Seventy? Looks like a really nice RIB, to bad there are rare on the market as I want one:)

There is a P21 here in Sweden that runs a 300xs :speechles

We made the race boat first and then the leisure version - Just place an order and then you can have a new one! Send me an email with your exact specifications and I'll give you a price - Cookee@bananasharkracing.com

Excellent work Amund201! You really got that boat flying! What you have not described is all the thought, planning and testing you have put into the project. It is not just like you put the boat on the water and achieved those speeds.... I know how many props you have been thru. :speechles
There will always be skeptics and that is fine but they should know that pitch can vary from announced to actual (hence low slip percentages) and that propshaft height with the setback factor should be taken into account.

I look forward to your next project... ;)

I had hoped you would get it fixed until that time :(

Thanks Chopper!

Yep there's been a few props for testing and a couple of times moving the rig, and I'm not done yet, still looking for that last 0.1 :)

And to the pitch issue, your correct. I think the Razor is counted as a stiff n pitch 28p after the work on it.

I'm hoping she gets sold this winter so I can start on the new project, but untill then I'l keep working on the Phantom, maybe a hydraulic lift ?

Cheers!

weekend visit

Huge thanks to Amund and JonP who came to visit me this weekend in Sweden.

None of us had met before but we had a great time.

Amund brought his P21 so I can now verify his previously published speeds!!

The conditions were by no means perfect, very windy and quite large chop but with the two of us in the boat we managed 81mph. With Daniel on his own he clocked 86mph.

His max speed on his GPS now shows 80 knots (92mph)

The set up and ride on this boat is absolutely stunning.

Here are some clips of him passing my pontoon.

Very very cool!

Set up and testing is often overlooked, but this proves it's worth doing right!

Thanks for a great day Elk and JonP, I had a blast! Boating & BBQ with fellow boaters, super! And thanks for the videos!
Looking forward to next year when you bring your P21 over!

I'm happy with the results of testing JonP's prop on saturday. It's a B&B Razor3 but not with a shortend barrel as mine. But it's now the second best prop I have tested so far. You can feel the boat leaping forward every time the boat gets lifted by the waves and that makes me think it needs more lift, and that seems to be the difference with the shorted barrel.
Mine is on it's way back from the states so I'm hoping I can go out testing a bit more before the ice comes :)

Cheers

The engine is a stock 250xs with just under 100 hours and everything is mesured with gps. I have the Garmin 420 hooked up to the smartcraft speedo as well, this gives me a good view of the fuelconsuption.

I get the slip to 8%.
I have not calculated with correction for the setback, I just mesure the hight as she sits with the setback.

I didn't post here to lie about anything, but we don't have the same swells as you guys do so it's not a problem to go WOT for longer periods of time. And as long as I dont have her rigged to low chinewalking is not much of a problem, just small corrections.

Thats one of the reasons I really like this boat, you can go very fast without the boat wanting to kill you, and you can push it if you want it to be dangerus.
But there is a big differnce with passengers, the boat won't lift as much and it's difficult to get over 73-74 knots.

Some more pics from this winter. Old fueltank and new.
Hi,

Very good speed for a 250xs, am curious to know how much liters is the new fuel tank you made for the phantom 21 ?

I have this boat now at Finland.
Seems that new fuel tank is 115 liters.

I´m rigging Mercury 200XS gen 2 to it at the moment with 6" setback hydraulic jackplate.
Waiting forward for testdrive before winter hits, maybe next weekend it will be time for testdrive.
