I WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYBODY THAT RESCUED ME AND PAT ON SUNDAY AT THE POOLE RACE. IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THE STEERING SHAFT THAT CONNECTS THE STEERING WHEEL AND BOSS TO THE DRUM BEHIND THE DASH,JUST SHEARED OFF,LEAVING ME FLAT OUT WITH THE STEERING DISCONNECTED. NOT SOMETHING I WOULD LIKE ANYONE ELSE TO EXPERIENCE. THIS BOAT HAS BEEN SCRUTINEERED MANY TIMES BEFORE WITH NO SIGN OF FATIGUE IN THAT AREA, SO I AM GOING TO PUT IT DOWN TO FATE. AFTER BEING RESCUED I WAS NOT QUITE WITH IT SO ONCE AGAIN I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL WHO HELPED IN OUR RESCUE, RETRIEVING OUR BOAT,AND SORTING OUT ALL OF OUR PROBLEMS. THERE ARE TOO MANY NAMES TO MENTION, BUT WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE, SO I AM EXPECTING A BIG BAR BILL IN COWES . IT IS QUITE COMFORTING TO KNOW THAT PEOPLE YOU ARE COMPETING AGAINST WILL DROP EVERYTHINK TO COME TO YOUR AID WHEN NEEDED. ALL OUR THANKS BRIAN AND PAT C13
ON A LIGHTER SIDE THE BRUISE ON MY BUM IS THE SAME SHAPE AS THE ISLE OF WIGHT!

THE ONLY THING WE COULD HAVE DONE WITH IS EJECTOR SEATS . THAT IS ALL THE TIME WE WOULD HAVE HAD.

Glad the pair of you are allright. Having done the same thing at exmouth I can vouch that it is not a very nice experiance. Whats the damage on the engine? Can you save anything? If theres anything I can help with before Italy get in touch.

Seriously tho, yes I do often get the train from Basingstoke, I do work for Hyperion and we do often launch the boat at drivers wharf. If I remember correctly, we might have had hangovers too, (we usually do!) so probably weren't any less grumpy

Say hello the next time you see me, and you should then be able to stop taking the pills

As someone who was blissfully unaware of the events surrounding Brian and Pat untill we returned to the pits (we were on a different course) I am still slightly concerned as someone else has already mentioned that the 1 Doctor was obviously al little busy with the incident and so therefore unable to tend to any other incident.

Of course I only know the bare bones of the story and may be jumping to conclusions, but I believe Brian was unconcious for several minutes(?) and was concussed afterwards and no doubt suffering from shock as well.

Of course the main thing is that no-one is seriously hurt and we can all be thankfull for that (I'll collect the money before the race in Cowes Brian! ) but I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on this right or wrong?

Hi Cookee

If I remember correctly, there was 1 doctor, 1 nurse and two divers plus the usual array of safety boats many of whom carry people with various degrees of first aid training. Also the RYA offered free first aid courses to all safety and racing crews at the beginning of the season.

Given this, it is obviously then down to the OOD to decide if there are grounds to curtail a race if they feel there is insufficent resources left on the course to deal with any further incidents. Given that Annie was OOD on Sunday, I don't think we could be in better hands and she has often cancelled or curtailed races even when the racers wanted to continue on safety grounds.

As racers, we can never see the whole picture so have to rely on the OOD and safety officer on duty on the day.

Personally I would not be concerned, but then we all make the decision to race or not based on the danger that we all accept any sport has the potential to bring. That's why we do it right? ... the rush of adrenaline ...

Having done Rally Driving, Hang Gliding, Parachuting, Free Falling, Gliding, Flying, Karting and an array of other sports ... they ALL carry risks. If there is professional organisation and safety, then its simply a percentage game.

My view of course, but with the team on duty in Poole, I respect their decision to continue given they had all the facts.

Like your signature says ... Powerboating because other sports only require one ball

Thanks for that Mikey - It's just that someone elses remark sparked a thought and I wondered what other people thought - I've known Annie since I first started racing with OCR and she is very experienced indeed.

I agree with you Annie is probably the best OOD that we have, but the facts seem to lean towards not enough safety cover for a second incident.
Whilst racing you need to know that the correct safety cover .is imediately available should you need it, if its not at any point during the race it should be stopped.

IMHO of course.
