Myself, Capt D.Umbo and 2 other male lunatics are looking into the possibility of buying one of these 2 Hunton Mavericks that are for sale (both have twin 454 mags) with the idea to race it at the Cowes-Torquay event and any other events we could enter.

Could I get some advice on what we would need to do to make this happen?

Racing qualifications? can we race with 4 in the boat? Do we all need to be qualified?
Racing clothes/safety gear?
Boat set up? racing insurance?
Which class of boat would we be in?
What other races could we enter?
Would we stand a chance wiht a 60mph boat!!??

i think the only one you could do would be the touring class......best to look at the rya web site under power boat racing and then the classes section.........................there is a pic of the hunton aswell ..............T6 i think

The Hunton 34 has something of a proven track record. Stuart Raven's 'Atlas Computers' Maverick ran in National Production Class 1 with some success in the early 90's. The Hunton also fit the class requirements for Class I and ran a few races as such until real Class I competition in the form of Richard Carr's 'Cougar Lamborghini arrived on the scene and the Hunton quickly reverted to NPC 1 and if I recall won the championship in that class.

NPC no longer exists in UK racing nor do the Touring and Grand Touring classes that replaced it. Currently aside from Basic racing, the Maverick doesn't fit into any class but this is not necessarily a bad thing as up to 8 events with provision for basic racing are on the RYA calendar for 2004 so you, as of this date still would have the opportunity to enter up to 4 races.

All the answers below apply to basic racing.

Racing qualifications? can we race with 4 in the boat? Yes but each person will have to be connected to a kill switch.

Do we all need to be qualified? Each person controlling the boat will need a 'day licence'. The others will need passenger permits

Racing clothes? Essentially anything but sleeves must extend to the writst and trouser legs to the ankle.

safety gear? Helmet (mostly orange), racing life jacket and whistle and medical compress.

Boat set up? I would seek the advice of someone who has succesfully raced big blocks in the past (Jon, are you listening?).

racing insurance? Personal accident insurance of £25k is recommended (but not mandatory) for basic racers

Which class of boat would we be in? See above

What other races could we enter? See above

Would we stand a chance wiht a 60mph boat!!?? Depends on sea conditions and your competition

so we just need a day licence? no other qualifications? How do we get one, how much do they cost and how long would it take to get one??

Yes maybe we should buy both the available huntons and run against each other..... least we would always be on the podium!!!

Day licences ususally cost between £25-£50 per licence and are available at the event (as are passenger permits).

This doesn't mean you can just show up and race on the day however. You will need to have pre-entered. You can get the entry form and the race instructions from the organising club.

so the Touring class sort of merges into the Basic Racing which we could enter....
This looks like 6 races a year on the South coast, with 4 left to go...

who would we be racing with/against? are we still running with all the ribs etc... even if we are not in the same race class?

what about the 2 diesel scorpion ribs?? what class are they??

What are the costs of being at the race day/pits?

According to the RYA's 'Powerboat Racing New Season Update 2004', a one day licence is £55 and a passenger permit £40. These both include 3rd party liability insurance but not personal accident insurace which can be purchased for an additional £10 and is in place for that particular event only.

So how does this effect your annual insurance premium.... do you get a normal insurance policy which doesnt cover race days? and then insure for those days thru the RYA?

Can you get insurance policies for over 65mph??
