got to the phantom. have had both and still with phantom . . . . but . . . . . if i had to buy a new boat for ski racing or just going fast as it would be a . . . . bernico!!! that is on a single engine outboard basis . . . . inboard . . . will think about that

How's it going over in New York, I guess my tip off to customs about you smuggling dope didn't work then!

johnson i wont your boat dont know of any long phantoms forsale do you? What speed are phantoms rated to? My boat goes on its side whn it reaches 70mph any ideas why?

Taz u r trimming the engine when you get on the plane aren’t u? What Pitch Prop are u running? The Guy who had my boat before hand weighed down the drivers side to balance the boat out with some gravel in the back to compensate for the torque steer. You mentioned you have changed the engine from an XR2 did u mount it dead centre? The other option is to mount the engine off centre but that would mean drilling more holes! Regarding the steering if you want to buy from the US try http://www.rickracers.com. I had some work down on my engine last week by Ocean Racing In Southampton. The guy did a great job. Doug Ashley Marine http://www.dougashleymarine.omnia.co.uk/ is probably the closest guy to us who knows his stuff. Also Captain Chaos who has just brought a brand new phantom (also based in Essex) said he uses GB watersports (peterborough) Greg Tel~ 01733 322108

Regarding the original post Ring or Phantom I find that rings tend to fall apart despite looking prettier!

Steady on!! you need to get your eyes seen to! A 21 Ring has to be the uglyest boat ever made! (bull nose model) 18, 20, 21, 23 Phantoms are luuuuuuuuvly lookin boats.

No contest from my point of view.

Like I said I prefer the Phantom any day. My first was a 16 and a friend had a yellow 16 foot ring. It looked a better shape than the Phantom 16 until the hull seperated from the deck! The Ring also had a better looking dashboard and interior. Cant remeber seeing a Ring 21 everyone else had Phantoms! :D

Johnson Like the videos of your boat looks like it goes pretty quick and the turbos / engines sound like the F1 boats in the american videos! How quick does she run and why diesel? Do you know how quick the orginal phnatom 26 on the front of Boat mad ran? Just being nosey!

"Rings tend to fall apart" Thats a pretty general summarisation if you dont mind me saying. I think I`m right in saying that many moons ago its was mostly Rings on the ski racing circuit, (at least thats what my Dad raced). As for the looks, I got to agree that the R21 is far from nice looking when compare to the Phantom.

Oh no I am going offend everyone now! Like I said I have limited experience of Rings, both people I know who had RING 16's had the hulls seperate from the deck. The Phantom 16 we have has been given hell all of its life by myself and two brothers and she has always held together bar needing some needing recarpeting, After sinking!

"Which ones comfier?" Orginal seats in the phantom made u feel like a real powerboat racer after wave jumping I never did piss blood but it felt like I should have done! The Rings where far more comfy.

When racing our Phantom 16 with a 90HP Yamaha against a ring 16 with same engine the phantom was faster.

It runs about 70 mph, just a smidge over in fact, when it was new (2000) and a little lighter (before the external steering, central heating, lifting eyes etc.) it ran a rock steady 72.
It's diesel because on average, it costs about £15/hour to run, as apposed to £150-£200 for the equivalent petrol power (650hp).
So no contest, as I simply couldn't afford to do the hours on the water I'd want to with petrol.

The first red 28 'BRUT', on the home page was a heavy boat, with extra fuel tanks and triple 175 (150 in todays money) mercs, it was made specifically for the '84 round britain race.
I think it ran mid/late 60's.

The second Yellow 28, 'BRUT' which followed was much lighter, built in Kevlar, triple 2.4 EFI's and ran close to 90.

Hey, I`m not offended. I think both Phantoms and Rings are fanstastic looking boats. Just seem to have a presence on the water.

Yeah, tiz really, Mike builds a pretty good boat, we just all have our own favourites/preferences, it wouldn't do for us to all be the same.

Johnson I hear you on the fuel costs thats amazing speed for the money on an hour by hour basis. Nice work!

silversurfer im sure my engine weighs to much for the boat so im going to move fuel tank amd battery up near the bow tank to try compensate for the weight and try trimming the trim tabs down more, i bolted engine directly back where the xr2 was 25 pitch prop

. Matt if i had my way i would make a bracket up and bolt 2 x 275 mercury engines on which was what i was intending to do until i saw the size of the engines compared to the xr2 i think the boat would sink.
