I'm not ya regular technogeek, so my opinion probably doesnt count for tuppence.

However, I've got one of them Ipaq thingys and bought a bluetooth gps reciever off of ebay (£80). It has to have independent software which was costly....especially the world-wide one.

Should you go this route & you wanted, you could BORROW my BACKUP COPY of said software.....I'd be in no rush to get it back:D

There was a guy selling them on Ebay for about $480 including shipping to the UK. You'd need to allow for duty and VAT though, and you would also need to get the UK mapping to go on it . . .

Are you still intending to buy the US one John? then we can find out if my UK mapping will load straight on.

If this site was properly run (like Ribnet for example) then this navigation question would surely have been rerouted to Tekkernicckel Q & A section.

Merry Christmas all!

Yes, I'm sorry about that, I can't apologise enough!

We will endeavour to raise our standards, and try not to be such a disappointment in the future.

Write it in your book - JF apologised!!! :D

And while we're on the topic of improvements, your spelling could do with a bit of work. Only one p in 'apologise' and one s but two p's in 'disappointment'. I can give you some lessons in the New Year. I charge a very reasonable £50 an hour.

Sat Nav

Oi let's get back on topic! :hatchet:

I'm also looking at SatNav stuff...

Does the Navman do live traffic updates?

What I want is something that does three functions:
1. Nav (obviously!)
2. Speed camera database
3. Live traffic info with route recalculation

So far I have only found that the PDA based solutions do all three - with a bluetooth connection to a GPRS enabled 'phone for the traffic updates. Anyone know of an alternative solution?

Yeh, stay at home!

I've got a HP4150 PDA, with a Navman 4410 Bluetooth GPS engine, it's never failed to get me home!!!

The downside is that it's a PDA first, and a navigation tool second, so it's a bit long winded having to switch both units on, select navigation programme, obtain route, establish a bluetooth connection, etc etc, luckily I don't often go outside my usual area, so I don't need to use it very often.

The solitaire game is pretty cool though!

All purchased from www.totalpda.com

My HP got me to trio mouldings and back with complete aplomb................unfortunetly I can t find the program "build boat" in the start menu.........so these things do have thier limits

If you don't particularly need a PDA, I'd go for the dedicated navigator (Tom Tom Go, Navman iCN 510, etc) as they just 'do it' without any complications.

IMHO

yeah i think thats the better option, ease of use really.

I is a bit fick, so I need fings nice n easy.

I was originally given a satnav unit as a gift, but took it back as i thought i'd get more use from a PDA in the long-run.

It did cross my mind that a dedicated unit would be more "bird friendly".........but in truth, how many gizmos can the fairer sex opperate anyway...............thats why i was selfish!

and as i said before, I got my back-up software at a very reasonable price
