Setback anyone?

I was thinking of setting my engine back by about 12"
Whats the pro's and con's of doing this?

they are ace in the right circumstances

The idea of having setback is to run the prop in 'cleaner water' but setting the engine back of the boat makes more problems e.g.
More setback means more stress on the transom.
Handling problems are exaggerated
Optimum engine height will be higher on a boat with more setback

I may have imagined this but with a CMC powerlift fitted on my old ring it let the revs run a fair bit higher.

i believe that you need to have a jacking plate that is adjustable underway to optimise the advantages

they are good in the right enviroment.
if you want a normal boat then dont bother

if you require ultimate speed when the weather is good then setback is what you need

Also with more setback the CG moves back & it should be easier to get the bow up.

Thank you frenchphil. I thought everyone was going mad.

The purpose of a jackplate with setback is primarily to
a) Raise the motor to reduce appendage drag off the gearbox& prop.
b) Shift the CG rearwards
c) Look cool - apparently

'Cleaner' water - yeah right.

Downsides of a jackplate can be:
a) You might not want to shift the CG back.
b) Jackplates tend to be a weak link.
c) Your transom takes much more load
d) The boats handling can go out the window - so you actually end up running slower to stay in control!

And I'm sure others!
