I know it has been discussed serveral times before  but I still trying to find the best setup for my P21..

Today i had my engine raised a good 2-3 cm, 1 "hole" from my previous position, see attached pic.
But now I find the chinewalking even worse! Can't get the bow up enough feels like there ain't enough lift??

And no roostertail? I can't get a beatiful tail on it, not even trimmed "out"??? Why it that??how do I get one of those??

Or is it the correct setup, and i'm a sad sad excuse for a driver??

Seen 60-62 mph all trimmed "in", but now only 55??? :(:(:(

Solutions
- New prop for more bowlift?? currently running a High 5 23".
- Raise it even more?
- a boat with two inboards ;)

Any help please??

Doubt you'll get a rooster with the gearbox that low in the water! As a rule if your going for speed i always set the point of my box almost level with the bottom of the boat (the lower the engine the more handling but the higher the engine more speed) but if you wanna go higher then you have to have a deep water pick up box!Plus if youve got a rooster (unless youve got a surface piercing prop) you'll prob lose speed!

The lower the engine, the more bow lift you get. High 5's arn't usually high speed props, but good for skiing. You need to note the RPM when you go out again, it may be higher, which would mean you are just getting more slip, a Laser might be a better prop for speed, and might work better at that height, hope that helps a bit ...............

thanks guys..
any info helps.. ;)
I guess i need to go for a Laser II in order to really get some "good" performance.. ;)

I also hit the rev limiter much sooner than before, when the engine was a bit lower - i guess this has to do with the slip..?

Cookee - what the difference in performace on your 2 bananas?? and what are your setuo with the opti??

Is an opti just the "wrong" choice for a Phantom?

Hey correct me if im wrong but your gearbox doesnt have a bullet (Nosecone) i remember with my 275 it was impossible to drive at speed until i fitted a nosecone to the box.

Just a thought!

dude i agree with cookee, you can afford to go up another hole and you will still have water pressure but you definitely need to change your prop for a taller one probably with some bow lift too.
out of interest where is your fuel tank?

When it revved higher was it with the same prop, if so was it going faster or slower?

We're still working on the setup on the leisure boat, but the C of G is much further forwards and it is a heavier boat with an engine with different characteristics, so like you we have to start again!

I drove a 21 yesterday with a 250 XS on the back, and a 24 Bravo - it was certainly lively and prone to getting out of shape with too much trim, but you could - just - drive through it. It also porpoised a lot and it felt like the prop had too much bow lift? It's a brand new boat and had no setup to speak of done on it yet, so it will improve with time ...........

i have p21 with standard 200 and have it raised, box sits just under the bottom of the boat no nose cone still gets plenty of water nice rooster trims out no chine walk run a laser 2 25" or 23" lose quite a bit of grip getting on the plane speically when carrying a load but once up its fine

Burty - the full tank is under the rear seat - guess it holds bout 200L.!?!? Guess i will have to try a Laser II 25" - but up "one more hole" I will lose holeshot right? I would really like to pull skiers. What will a higher engien height do when i'm running with a High 5??

Cookee - it was going a bit slower... What did the P21 run at?

Bert - are you running a XR2 or a "standard" like mine..? What kind of performance do you see? can you pull skiers or would you change back to a High 5 for skiing?

Once again - thanks for all the hits. :)

The P21 did 75, but it was a handfull unless you were totally comitted.

If it was slower then you've got more slip.

If you can write down speeds, reves, props and engine heights, you will get enough information to sort it out - a bit slower or a bit faster isn't enough information really - if you want to go fast you need information!

I've always found a large amount of cash is pretty helpful as well!

Talking of speed, how fast is the leisure shark? And will it be at the poker run?

Ha ha - yes a huge wad is a great help as well!

Still working on the right prop - currently looking for a standard Raker? 22" or 24" havn't got it revving yet.

hmmm I guess i will have to take alot of this info and use it as a step-by-step procedure...
Hoped for an easy "way" to do the setup ;)

a standard 200, with the 23" just under 70mph according to my speedo but i think i may have been over reving it a bit, rev counter only went up to 6k and was going over that hence rebuild last year tried the 25" briefley with new rev counter 65mph at 5700rpm the 23" was ok for skiing just had to have it trimmed right in for pull away haven`t tried it with the 25" depends what you do more of don`t do much skiing so not really that bothered as long as the boat will do it now and again what you really want is a lifter

Lars,
Just an afterthought are you running solid mounts or on the stock rubber wobbly things

Have no idea?!

is is something i can check or??

I'm not quite sure what the motormounts are - excuse my english - but is it the bolts wich attach to the "setback-thing" or??

Nothing to do with the setback, they are what connect the outboard leg & powehead to the swivel bracket assy. In most high performance applications you swap out the mercury supplied mounts which are sleeved rubber for a solid mount as made by bob's machine shop, land & sea + a load of others. If your running in fairly calm water should not be a problem. Check the amount of free play by hand really hard now expand that by 200+ horse power. They do move about hence the large aftermarket in solid mounts. If you are happy there is no free play or an acceptable level then continue to try further set ups. As you have a New motor I doubt if there is any wear & tear issues but these things do move about & it's worth checking & being aware of it in the begining.

Not that you have to do it but When racing I'd always Replace the Rubber mounts first thing, It's one of the few things that the rules allow you to do. The other was to remove all the standard bushes on the Tilt tube, saddle, steering tube, Power trim mounts & replace with Bronze (dont think that last bit was legal but it gave no speed advartage, just more strength & less wear), 1 pce propshaft, heavy duty bearing carrier & pin the retaining nut. Note this last para is for heavy duty offshore performace work not pleasure so dont worry about it just be aware.

It's very easy to overlook the most obvious
If there is a lot of movement in the joints & bearings that will reflect in the handling thats all, things on your to do check list. Ill post some pics below of mount locations
