Speedo

Im sure the speedo in my boat it shafted so I want to get a new one. But my Cav Plate is set 5" above the bottom of the boat and I was told that the pickup would not work because of this. I had no idea how these speedo's work so can someone enlighten me!
I want to know how fast im going but I dont want to shell out on a GPS device that gives a speed reading unless anyone knows of one that is a reasonable price?

Garmin handheld GPS start at around £70 or if you want to get yours working for reference only then buy an external speedo pick up for about a fiver
