the big boat in the back ground is called tramontana,does anyone know what happened to it? she was moored at hamble point for years

This Tramontana was originally Tommy Sopwiths PHILANTE ,it is possible that it took the second name after being sold .The name Tramontana was used by Dick Wilkins who owned the first 2 boats by that name in the Cowes RACES OF 61/62 he was TOMMY sOPWITH's sponsor when he raced Jaguars in the 50's.Sopwith bought a larger boat designed by Don Shead in the early mid 70's in fact I believe that the boat shown is also a Shead design..maybe it was bought by Tim Powell who carried on racing Tramontana 2 after Wilkins sold it ,but where this Yacht is now I can't help.

The Motor Yacht in question was in fact Tramontana III. It was owned by a consortium. Tim Powell, Don Shead and may have been Mike Doxford were definitely involved with her.

Some racers always used to turn up with their private yachts in tow as most of you already know. What was the name of Derek Pobjoy´s motor yacht that used to moor just inside the marina at Cowes on race weekend? And didn´t David Hagan used to run a Hatteras or something similar?? Can´t remember the names for the life of me......

Derek Pobjoy's 70' Gentlemans Motor Yacht is Fleur de Lys. Was at Berthon Lymington last time I saw it/her.

She was sent to the BVI Tortolla and later sent to USBVI in St Thomas 2005

Tram 3.

Thunderbolt, sorry to correct you but that boat was not Philante, she was about 20ft longer. Boat pictured was Tramontana from new, it was built for Dickie Wilkins. He was a very keen fisherman so she had a small Sabre as a third engine installed in the middle as she was too fast on tickover with the two main engines. It was purchased by Don Shead and Tim Powell, in about 1976, she lived at Hamble point for many years, Tim bought Don's share, took her to the Med and then the Caribbean. She was looked after for a long time by Simon Pridham. Spent many summers on her, she was a wonderful boat. Unfortunately made from wood she needed a lot of upkeep. An absolutely classic design, way ahead of her time.

Ive been looking for this boat for years ! As a young boy I travelled over from cowes in chausseur to hamble when tramontana was out of the water in a boatyard. my mum worked for sir max aitken and I spent most of the summer aboard her in the solent I assumed at the time that that sir max had bought it? I also spent time aboard blue max. I remember tramontana being 72 feet long and a lovely vessel it's great seeing her again !!

blue max was last seen as a house boat in bembridge,a couple of years ago and is now white

Yeah she was painted white when she went to lymington and renamed white lightning or something like that . as you say now in bembridge

She was owned by my uncle Tim Powell. He had her in Mallorca. He was selling her and the potential new owner requested a test drive. Somehow he ended up doing the test drive on his own. She was then stuffed full of cocaine and used for a drug smuggling run where she was seized and impounded and my uncle lost her for good and was unable to claim on insurance. Very sad
