Transom Bolts.......

Could someone please advise me where I can buy 12mm (standard mercury fit) stainless transom bolts, washers and nuts from?

Dont think the cable ties will hold.......

12 mm isn't really the correct size, you should be using a fine thread 1/2" (unf) You can buy them from your local merc dealer but you'd have to sell the boat to fund them, so you could try your local fastener shop!

Failing that, and considering the size of your motor, you'd get away with 12mm but you really do need to use fine not coarse!

A fine thread enables you to tighten them a bit better and grip better - I think!

Rang some of the above - you can forget metric fine or UNF - unless someone knows better?

You can't do a unc up tight, due to the threads being so coarse.

One rev on a unc is equal to about 2 on an unf!

I've bought over size bolts in the past and had a unf thread machined onto them. Used to use Steve Salmon, so they'd be ready on Thursday!!!!

I've got loads of plain unf nuts in stock, but no nylocks or bolts!

How about 12x1.25, very similar in size/pitch to 1/2" UNF

Quite correct on the fine Vs course thread argument, also a fine thread with resist vibration better in terms of slacking off.
The difference is in the thread angles & tPI threds per inch / MM depending.
There is only a slight difference between UNF & UNC to BSF & BSC threads think it's about 2 degrees from memory will check later. So under the old imperial system here you could get away with combining US & UK nuts & bolts, They just felt a little tight but ran on fine.
Same goes for US NPT again only mimimium bifference to the old imperial pipe thread & can use both / either., Tapers as well

Metric has quite a big difference look up the exact later & post.Powerboaters should never have accepted the metric system.

Had this problem with mine.

Answer is:

Go to local fastner shop and buy a length of S/S 1/2" UNF threaded bar and some nuts
cut bar to length and weld nut on 1 end and hay presto you have a bolt

i think the cost was around 12 quid for a metre length

Get hold of a little book ZEUSS Tables
Covers all Nuts, Bolts, Thread info, Dill sizes for clearance holes & tapping threads & drill size.
It's the dogs, somewhere down the line it will pay for itself in gold.
Last time I got one was about 1.99 engineering section / bookshop
