He hit the wash from a tanker, those swells can creep up from a ship that's passed many miles away, and are lethal (obviously)

Charles Burnett had fully enclosed canopies, but when it's a high speed 'full' inversion like that, they'd have to be superhuman! burnetts canopy lid (Buzzi) opened under the impact and the force of the water was dispersed by the ali frame on which the instruments were mounted up high, it was left bent and buckled, so had it not been there,that coulda been Charlies neck.

I reckon there aint any guaranteed method of safety in that situation.

Tanker washes are serious and you have very little warning. I can recall just passing a mark on the southern speed, was a calm day looking back to see where Panache was & I swear the marker boat dissapeared almost up to the mast head, The folling ring hit it and dissapeared for at least another two laps.
Having exploited Crash hats in another thread. What about the use of neck rolls..... they seem to work at the extreme limits.
It's not sicko, If watching this prevents a reader hear going balls out at a tanker wash with the conciquences, then it's valid & not such a waste. There but for .......................go You & I. We are talking big ships here not red funnel ferry but Big boats they look like the Isle of wight but move!

Well I used to wear one, and my neck is f*cked! ...boy those 26' Rings land hard!

I can recal the exact moment as we landed hard on the port side, and the combined weight of my (empty) head and full crash helmet was too much for my wee neck! the feeling/noise was horrid!

Was just thinking about this today as my neck is a bit sore after doing only 3/4 of a lap yesterday.

I've never used one but I imagine the upside is that the neck is supported laterally. The downside that I envisage is decreased mobility.

Am I on the right track?

It depends on the size & type of neck roll, to be effective then IMHO there is a lack of mobility. Used them in motorsport and I find em a real pain. but a smaller type about half size is normally ok and doesn't contact the helmet untill you head goes right back

I used a cut away neck brace in touring cars: It did not connect until you were almost at breaking point, but then it did connect. Some people raced with full height braces, and they had little sideways movement - not good

In Touring Cars, you get a load more lateral movement, every single corner, and this strains the neck - front/back movement is easier on the neck. But I will proberbly have them for Ramsgate. Little girl navigator had a headache after our half lap, and that means I didnt get any. So will be buying waytever is required to ensure she does not have a headache again!

Doubt if I'd use one but I got a mike tyson neck from crah hats anyhow, wouldn't save my ass but I dont inted to go that quick coz I'm far too old and sensible

I solved the females and headaches problem by letting her indoors race our ski boat

Does anybody use some kind of restraint for stopping the head whipping forward when a stuff occurs? Or is the impact not that severe (compared to in Nascar for example where the impact can be devastating - like the accident which killed Dale Earnhard?)

Suppose you could use the Hans device, as used in F1, indy car etc

That would work but only if you wear over the sholder harnesses.

You can buy these shoulder harness which ties to you helmet, and stops frontal neck snap. You would have to stuff quite seriously for it to work...
