I don't seem to be recieving emails about threads I'm participating in despite have all the right boxes ticked?

I dont always get them either! Server side emails you cant really rely on them in my experience.

When we build e-commerce websites the secure server always send an email confirmation but the web server dosnt allways do it job for one reason or another.
