After fitting my nose cone i will have to paint the gearbox does anybody know what paint i can use i want a spray and i like the idea of silver, Can i use car spray cans then lacquer after ?

You can paint it with anything you like,

but if you want to do a proper job that will last i would suggest a marine grade paint designed to withstand the salt corrosion attack.

Just my opinion.:)

why clear?
it's not needed or normally used on a gloss finish.it's used on base coats.

Taz I got the mercury black paint from Thorpe bay Marine on the sea front repainted my leg with it worked a treat. Remeber you commented i had taken all the paint off. Thats the Peterboat pub a dropping tide and time for another pint - are you sure??

BTW have you got somewhere you can work on your boat indoors over the winter?

You guys are all a bit pro compared to my handy work!

mercurys black is an enamel.....not paint.

and its a fortune...............Mathew, whatever you used on your outdrive legs looked blinkin good to me......if its holding up, it seems a good formula

Yeah thats trhe stuff - 10 min job with plastic bag over the prop. Shines like new!

£14 a can i think

That looked like hard work mate!

Seemed like a good idea at the time. :D
When I didn't use clear, the black seemed to lose it's shine after a while. So far, with the clear, it still looks quite good.

keep it well polished
when i bought my boat the outboard leg and gear box had been painted with a rattle can.looked awfull.first time out in the water the paint fell of the gear box.i used a da sanded it right down.etche primed it,followed by 2k primer scotched it down then hit it with 2k gloss.excellent job looks like glass and reflects like a mirror.but i have been doing it 17yrs.

I don't know what brands of paint you have available but a lot of drive rebuilders over here use Dupont Nason.

Here's my TRS drives I did last winter. Primer on half the drive, silver Dupont Nason on the lower.
