does anybody know why?

Maybe the latest crop of competitors aren't as good at bending the rules!

First of all who told you they were all doing 70mph?

According to PB1-98, Jeff Locock did 68.92 mph on Windermere in 1988 in a B class OCR boat.
I assume this would have been a 'Tower of Power' 1.8, straight six Merc

Perhaps speeds are more accurate with GPS. i still hear of OCR racers getting 68 out of thier 1.8 boats but yet to see it.

I think it's fair to say that the sort of speeds achieved in record breaking conditions are not realistically repeatable in race conditions - going round corners and rough water mean handling is at least as important as top speed!

It's been my observation when talking to you lot that 66 mph quickly becomes 'nearly 70', which soon after changes to '70', and one more trip down the pub and it's 'over 70' :drain:

cookee i know that they did 70mph because thats vicky crumps record on windermere.

and mark kirks record in 1.3 is about 60mph and we got no way near that on windermere in his old boat running same prop and set up but he was alot lighter.

Yeah, but her motor would have been bent! :D

Said it in a pevious thread boats are going no quicker now than they were 25 years ago.

Just have a look at some of the old race averages from around then.

The conditions dictate the speed...........

Guess all those saftey cells slow you up......

Unleaded fuel..........

There could me a number of reasons, eco stuff dont help much.

do you recon a 19 argo would go quicker in tandom because thats how martin bull had his in 1.3 and that was quick.

i mean 1.8

Whilst some of the speed records of 25 years ago may be similar to today, The race average speeds must be better now.

Put simply, a 4 litre boat of 25 years ago was likely to be smaller, and less able, a 21' Stapely with 2 straight 6's, or even 175 V6's, may have been quick at Windermere, but it wouldn't get a look in against a B28 Batboat with twin 215hp opti's when it comes to offshore work.

The once all conquering Phantom 25 is laughable up against the B28, or a more recent cat of close to 30'.

I think todays higher power motors, have simply ended up on larger, more capable boats, so the top speed is similar, but the average atainable is greater.

so, I have to disagree there.

If boats weren't getting any better/quicker, why has there been the evolution in design that there has, everybody should have stayed with the same craft, and just benifited from the increased power over the years!..but that isn't what happened.

A bit of 'out of context' editing & the tabloids would have a field day.

RaceBoat gurus' U-Turn!

Johnson Fuller says Phantoms are laughable

Very good!

But you know what I mean, I'm just being realistic.

If the P25 hadn't been bettered, they would still be racing, and winning.
And whilst they still occasionally turn up at an event, they are way of the pace, Steve would be the first person to tell you that.

From what I have seen todays races are shorter & a lot more inshore, that may accout for Higher averages.

But Heck it's the best fun since............... Whatever the speed

It's all about first past the post not the race average anyway!!!
as long as it doesnt end up like pursuit cycling !!!!!!!!!!!! Yawn!!!

What was the last calm race 4 ltr winning average same for a 2 ltr

anybody know?
