I would have thought London-Monte Carlo (with your Dad winning in 'HTS') also so I guess I have no idea.

'Ultimatum' was originally shaft powered and it had stand up bolsters. It was then was converted to outboards and when Tony Dowley bought it, it became a stern drive 'sit down' boat so very possibly it was the boat you rode in.

Jeez!..stand up!, in 'Ultimatum'! that boat wasn't blessed with huge amounts of freeboard, the occupants must have stuck out in a very exposed way, don't think I'm brave enough for that.

I guess the clue is that it's 'HTS II', not the original 'HTS', which must have been Mike B' original 'London-Montecarlo' winning boat.

Ok - had a couple of bevies last night so might be slow but here goes - as for accuracy?

HTS II was a 28ft Souter powered by twin Sabres on Merc Drives - not sure which mark (III?). The really scary part was first they tried using push buttons linked to something like a trim pump for the steering. Sure enough it did not react very quickly and was soon changed to a std helm. When still boat was v-stern down so plus there was little freeboard at the stern due to the weight of then Dagenhams finest in the stern.

The boat was this is from my memory so probably not 100% was built for racing to then Class II Cruiser regs which required 6ft head room and bunks plus kitchen utencils inc a cooker (camping stove) - Hence a big buldge ahead of the crew.

The boat was so narrow and engines fitted so tight to do any service they had to remove the engines - 275Hp Sabres.

The boat got the Diesel World Speed record in either 73 or 74 at just over 68mph - have no idea who held it before. Fairly radical vs a Fairy Huntsman at the time.

After the colapse of HTS the boat was sold on. Eventually arriving back at my Dads then yard in Lancing where a dubious (Westlake) Big Block on a Carb was subsituted for who have no idea. Rigged by a bloke from NZ who lived for a year in a Transit camper van, in the yard, complete with wife & kids (bizar way of seeing Europe), what happened next to the boat have no idea.

Near 70 is a pretty cool speed from twin 275's back then, especially when you consider what it must have weighed, and the losses through a speedmaster/transmission!

Any idea of the all-up weight?

PS. which boat was it that went to Monte Carlo then?

Thanks for the info the boad did look strngely familiar but when I saw it it had o/bs think early OMC V6s and not I/b. I saw when as a kid on holiday in the sarf of france think was owned by a sarf london car dealer (had no hair). Plus the boat I think was light blue with wight top-sides.

Will find out the weight. The 68mph is from one of those Windermere certificates on the wall at mi ma and pa's place. Everything was very light and small (you can see the engine mount reinforcements on the outside of the hull). I'll get some info on it.

The London-Monte-Carlo (1972) boat was HTS I the 33ft Souter. Now resident as Apache at the Pitsea Powerboat Museum. Think still got up to 56mph with 250s on shafts, reinforced with a couple of trees.

Have a selection of scanned photos which got used at a Ford event a couple of years ago. Plus some photos of Fairy's from the round Britain in 68 (now 37 years ago) that Hendy Lennox sent me.
