merc 2.4 efi engine trouble

ive been having trouble with my 1990 merc 2.4 efi, once its started on the trailer it runs fine and revs sweet in neutral but when i put it in gear an put the foot down ive got no response and it keeps cutting out, when i last took it out i managed to get out the harbour and it suddenly sprung into life and i was racing around for about 20 mins with no problems, then when i slowed down and came in the harbour i had no throttle again and it kept cutting out again any ideas?cheers

i've just spent alot of time sorting out my fuel system after burning out a pump. the pump is noisy due to aeroate fuel in the input side, best to go through and check for air leaks, i found mine to be at the top of the pick up inside the tank.

however, mine did a similar thing to yours and it turned out to be the stator. reved fine in neutral but broke down under load and got worse over time.

Also look for water in the tank.. Water is heavier than fuel and will roll around like a ball at the bottom of the tank until it get near the pick up tube to the suction side of the pump then the pump sucks up a load and the motor starts to see a lackluster performance..

Just a thought,
Jay @ JSRE
