On domestic style saddles, it help to minimise the hammering that takes place when the lower gets pulled back from the rams on re-entry, then bashes back when you put your foot down. so just keeps everything nice & tight reducing the 'slide hammer' effect. Not really needed with an offshore saddle IMVHO (if driven correctly)
