New SOLAS V regulations
Since the speed limit was introduced on Windermere, a large number of sportsboats have moved to the North West/North Wales coast.
Many of them have discovered that the sea, unlike lakes, has big waves and tides resulting in lots of them being swamped.
Strangely enough, the skippers of these boats all seem to know the internationally agreed signal for distress which involves standing up and waving both arms up and down like a demented budgie.
SOLAS V now advises that in addition to normal safety kit, all hardboats should carry a mirror, bell, 3" ladder and a nice piece of cuttlebone.
