Tom Newby Killed in heli crash
Yesterday was a very sad day for the powerboat industry when news came through that Tom Newby, Powerboat magazine photographer, was killed in a helicopter crash.
Tom was carrying out a photo shoot at the performance trials taking place in Sarasota.
It seems that the helicopter was side ways on about 100 feet in front of the boat, Pure Platinum, taking some head on shots. Then for some reason it tripped and unfortunately went down.
The pilot, Mark Watters, who regularly flies with Tom is in a critical condition in a near by hospital.
I had the pleasure of flying alongside Tom at the Key West Offshore Worlds a few years back. More recently we shot the P1 Championship together in Malta. He was an awesome powerboat photographer, and a great bloke.
My heart goes out to all at Powerboat magazine.
