Ring 16 c with a 75 merc, then a 140 suzuki, taught me how not to rig a boat, but I still learnt a hell of a lot about handling from trying to keep it in a straight line!!

a 14' clinker, ply on oak ribs runabout/speedboat built by ourselves in 1968 with a 1963 Johnson 40hp Electramatic outboard, still have the original Johnson parts catalog ( if anyone every needs a copy........ )
the hull was "copied" along similar lines to a Tremlett hull.
pic below the first launch 8th July 1968, we later re-deck her and race it while we were building T14.
( dad & brother in boat, me take the pic )

If you dont count the boats dad brought (mirror sailing boat / p16 shared with brothers) then it was a P20 (phantom 600) and an XR2! Spent years growing up in Salcombe marveling at all the phantoms with noisey xr2's brought one as soon as i had a job with money!

Mine was a narwhal 270 dinghy with a 4 horse merc. I could get it to plane with myself +1. To be fair, we weighed nothing at ten years old! Must dig the photos out! I even sprayed the prop silver so it lOoked a bit like a stainless one!

We had a Zodiac with an inflatable keel and a Yamaha Malta as a tender to my old man's Fairline Sunfury. Me and my bro could get it on the plane and raced it round zapcat style. With just me in it went like stink! There was another kid with a Bombard Ax2 and a 4hp, he was quicker in a straight line but we'd have him in the corners. Then my old man swapped the Malta for a 5hp Mariner with his mate and we annihilated all the other kids in Herm every Summer Good times!
We then got hold of a 13ft Dory with a 30hp Yam, we used to follow my dad around, then eventually once he was sure we knew the rocks properly he'd follow us. Summers were awesome.
The Sunfury & Dory went when I reached about 14 or 15 and he got an Avon Searider with a 90hp Merc. He then sold that to a drugdealer (unbeknown to him at the time!). The Harbour office phoned my dad to say the boat had been found in Weymouth full of fuel cans and tied up like a horse, he told them he'd sold it a few days ago, then the guy got busted bringing in a load of pot, threw it all over the side in St Peter Port Harbour and went down for a few years!
Some of my earliest memories are at about 5 or 6 when my dad had a 17ft Fletcher with a Merc 90. As he's a boatbuilder he was always picking up bargains, the best being a salvaged Fairline Turbo 36 that hit a rock around the back of Herm. Him and his mate (a surveyor and naval architect) salvaged it with the Fletcher with the help of some tarps and pumps borrowed from another mate at the fire station, beached it on the spring tide on fisherman's beach, and patched it up with plywood and sikaflex. He got it back to Guernsey on the next spring, bought it as a write off from the insurance company for peanuts and fixed it over the winter. We used that for a couple of years before he got fed up of not being able to dry it out, and I think that's when the Sunfury got snapped up.
He hasn't had a boat for over 10 years now, the Avon was the last, but he wants to buy my Osprey off me as a project now He's too old to come out in the Ring though haha. I used to be so jealous of all the guys with Rings and Phantoms when I was a kid, the sound of offshore legs used to get me stupidly excited! Now I have the means to have one it's like those summers all over again, only I'm not sitting there dreaming!

The good old days! Lol. The first boat in the family was a dejon 14! Had a shite engine on it, so my old man in his stupidness, thought a merc 60 would be good. Was bloody fast for a flat bottom lump of junk, if a little dangerous. I upgraded to a narwhal narvik 360 rib with a 40 horse evinrude. Went well and was great for skiing!

Shetland 535 with a Soozook DT50.
Then bought a 1970s bare Fletcher 129 and fitted the DT50 to it. No carpet, no trim, just a pair of plastic canteen chairs fixed to the deck. Washing line steering. Mental thing.

Jon ! I never had a boat named 'River Runner', the Dory was IOU 150 (named after the amount I had borrowed from my mum to help me buy it, circa 1970), I dont think she ever did get repaid the full amount though.
