Cowes 2014 Update

If both Vee & Dean come out what a battle that will be. Both of their boats are now well proven and very fast. Would love to see the film of that battle - it would be epic!

Just booking holiday etc., rumor has it that this event is now the first weekend of September rather than the August bank holiday weekend?

Never book flights on event rumours! - I have learned the hard way.

For the second year running the Cowes Classic will be held one week later than UK August Bank Holiday weekend - Saturday 30th August - Sunday 31st August.

Event timings can be found here;

Thanks for clarifying John. Holiday now booked.

The long wait is over

The British Powerboat Racing Club working with the RYA are proud to announce that the start of the Cowes Classic 2014 will commence from Egypt Point at 09:00, Sunday 31st August.

In reply to the news, Event Director Dorian Griffith said "This is fantastic news, the BPRC has demonstrated to the UIM and RYA that it can organise safe and well organised races over the last few years, it will be amazing for the people of Cowes and fans to see a Cowes Torquay start again".

Rob Andrews who has overseen the duty of Officer of the Day at the Cowes Classic event since 2010 said this evening, "After several years of proving to relevant authorities that the BPRC can run a safe Cowes Torquay Cowes race, I am delighted that I can drop the green flag from Egypt Point in August".

Can you say where the base for the race will be located?

I know the financial implications of using a marina are a major consideration when organising the the race but speaking as a lowly spectator it is frustrating when you can not get anywhere near the boats. In the past few years with the boats being located at the Royal Yacht Squadron they have been virtually out of site for the average punter.

It would be nice to have some form of access/contact/view.

The Cowes event pits will be located at The Royal Yacht Squadron as per last year (2013).

If you want access to view the boats at the RYS, we will have a page in early August on >> cowestorquaycowes.co.uk to apply for a pit pass.

dont get me wrong, its great that this historic race is still going, but with the race boats moored at the rys,it does add the "them and us" even more so. im sure the guys enetered in the race can stump up an overnight fee in yacht haven,so we keep the race boats, safety boats and other mere mortals together

I see your point Carl, but in fairness to John; all the organisers at the RYS were as accommodating as possible to those interested spectators last year.

im sure they were, but in my opinion,it would be better if everyone was together

Points made noted, but when the hire of the CYH amounts to many thousands of pounds, & the fact that the organising club, contrary to popular suggestion, is far from being rich, then the offer of virtually free accomodation for scrutineering cannot be overlooked.
The accomodation for race control, together with that for the prizegiving being all together also greatly eases the problems of constant travel between CYH & RYS.
In the early days, the scrutineering was from a barge moored in the River Medina, & later to W.A.Souters boatyard at the far end of Arctic Road.
It was only in the 1970's that the CYH was used, & access was always restricted, until fairly recent times.
Granted the CYH gives an inclusive & grand spectacle, but at a cost. A cost that, without a well-heeled title sponsor, cannot be currently afforded, sadly.
We should be grateful to the officers of The RYS, who will allow pass bearing persons access to their Jubilee Haven.
I am sure that all bone fide "snappers" & others wishing access can talk nicely to race control/apply as per John's post, & obtain a pass.
The fact the race is starting close to Cowes is surely a cause for celebration, not negativity.

i wasnt being negative, just making an opinion. and it is excellent news that the race start is back in the solent

If we had Surfury alongside the likes of HTS at the Squadron it would be nostalgia overload! I can dream!

Will there be a bang of the cannon to start things off?
You know how us Yanks love firepower.

Thanks again for the effort,

Is Charlie coming over?

Jeff
